To buy or not to buy..? That is the question.

The place for those OT discussions that you just HAVE to share in a doll themed forum.

To buy or not to buy..? That is the question.

Postby SoapBubbles » Sat Feb 02, 2013 6:45 pm

After quite a few years of NOT buying anything for my doll, I've suddenly hit this stage where I seem to be spending a lot of money on them. Clothes, wigs, eyes, face-up tools.... I think about the only thing I haven't spent money on are more dolls themselves. :?

Now... I am so tempted to buy even more goods for them. >.< I actually have a massive order just loaded up into the shopping cart, and all I need to do is click "Check out" and follow the steps from then on. But I also feel that I'm spending way too much in a short period of time. I don't regret any of the spending I've done so far, but I feel that I shouldn't spend any more for the time being... But, on the other hand, I really want those items. Graaah! I don't know what to do!

So my question is: How do you decide when to buy something, and you think you should abstain?

I'm actually in a very similair position myself, only include dolls as well as things for dolls. I think if you're hesitant to spend the money, don't click check out just quite yet.

How do you decide when to buy something, and you think you should abstain?
I try to balance out a few things and ask myself the following questions:
"How much do I want this?"
"Is this item limited aka do I need to a make decision right now" This means I might buy a Dollheart Fukubukuro instantly compared to deliberating for weeks or even months for basic, non-limited goods
"Is my desire for this item likely to fade quickly?" This is useful not only for dolls but for other goods like clothing. Basically, if you stop looking at the website for a month or longer, will your opinion of the item have changed? If no, then get it. If yes, then reconsider.
"What doll is this for?" I try to stick to my existing dolls rather than planned dolls when buying things because plans change.

When I started feeling like I'd spent a lot of money on the crew all at once, then I knew to slow down. My mind started jumping to how I need to save money for the future. I also looked at my crew, and keeping in mind that I do have a body and head on the way, felt satifised with what they have.

I set up limits for my on self on paypal, 10,20,30 bucks or what ever I want to spare for doll items on line. When the balance hits zero I stop. If there is a more expensive item, I build up my paypal till I can get it. Hope this helps.

>_> I have poor impulse control.

That about sums up how I end up buying most of my doll stuff.
I have so many dolls that I can't fit all their names in my signature anymore. @__@

Thank you everyone for your replies! I really appreciate the time you've all taken to write all this out! :D

Saving up vs. spending now... 'Tis a battle between probable future gratification vs. instant satisfaction... I am not entirely sure which would make me happier in the end.

Hmm... "Quite a bit", "I have time to consider this", "Probably not", "I only buy things for my existing dolls anyway, lol." Maybe I'll try holding out for a few weeks and see if I still want the items. That would probably tell me if I really want them or not. :)

I also have set limits on my 'free spending' money, I have a different storage system for money I can waste away as I please and money I'm keeping for life's essentials, but what I'm debating between is spending that money now or holding out in case something better comes along (essentially).

 I'll try not to follow that example Lamia.

I try to ask myself 2 questions: Will I actually use it? Do I have somewhere to put it?

If I can't say yes to both, I don't buy it.

Thanks for the input Grey. :D

After seeing all the replies to my original post and taking things into consideration... I have actually decided to resist and clear up that shopping cart. I swear I'm going to dream about those goods tonight, but I'll hold onto my money for now.

Thank you again everyone! I'm sure if I didn't try putting this thread up, I would still be rolling around my room wondering if I should click buy or not.
