I honestly think it started because they didn't want the forum to get out of control. After all, there's a huge BJD fandom, and there's also a huge Barbie fandom, a huge Blythe fandom, a huge Tonner fandom, etc., and they just don't have the bandwidth to support all of it. As time goes by, however, they seem to be getting more and more picky, as the field gets wider, the fandom grew, and the lines between type of doll start to blur. Like the Goodreau dolls - American made resin BJDs that look like an amalgation of a BJD and an American Girl doll. And as they get more particular, personal taste becomes more of an issue. Nowadays, it doesn't even get an automatic pass if it's a resin doll made by an Asian company whose other dolls they allow. Meanwhile, because people like being better than other people and don't like admitting that their leadership is biased, people start getting all elitist about stuff.
We, on the other hand, have the advantage of being a fairly small group. It's no hardship for us to let everyone show off their entire collection, because there are few enough of us it doesn't make much of a difference.
