Dollfie Dream Sister: MDD writ large or Obitsu 50cm killer?

Postby Ms. Geek » Fri Aug 27, 2010 10:15 am

http://www.figure.fm/post/en/15194/Volks+DDS+50cm+new+body+official.html

Google Translate from Volks JP site

It's a beautiful sculpt, but the important thing is this: is this a Mini Dollfie Dream at 50cm? Or does this have a DD2/DDDy-style continuous skeleton? The Mini Dollfie Dream's weakness is in the fact that one piece fits into the other without the skeleton locking together. It is annoying to have to deal with the MDD tendency to "go to pieces" when you are putting on clothes. Of course, K2 came up with the ultimate solution to MDD's problems, which is to hack an Obitsu skeleton into a MDD "shell."

Seeing will be believing...looking forward to the DDSister's arrival at Tenshi no Sumika Torrance.

Of course 2 days AFTER I order a 50cm Obitsu I see they are coming out with this!! Oh well maybe by the time this becomes a regular release body I'll have enough money to have both :D

Don't worry- you'll be very happy with the Obitsu 50 cm body. It's really nice, and has incredible posing abilities. The only thing I can honestly say is better with the Volks body is that the knees are prettier- but the knees on the Obitsu are fine.

Hmph.

A slightly smaller version of the Dollfie Dream body. At first glance of their comparison shot the DDS looks to be proportioned about the same as a DD2 medium bust, just shorter.

"Able to reproduce the pose more attractive, enhance the mobility of hip and elbow joints around the body. Greatly expanded range of poses."

Outside of the height difference, the only change looks to be the elbow joints, which look like they have a double pivot similar to the Obitsu 50cm. The "enhanced mobility" at the hip joint could have easily been accomplished by trimming some of the butt overhang away.

"Was able to have retained such weapons pose at hand, significantly enhanced retention of parts of each joint."

"Significantly enhanced retention of parts..." I hope this means they retooled the skeleton molds a little so the "peg" parts fit tighter in the "socket" parts and arms, hands, and ankles aren't falling out as often.

"But different height, body size is normal because it fit DD, DD can wear it with just a dress size! The head of course, the hand parts and ankle parts are batch compatible with DD."

This sounds like the DDS has about the same "circumferences" as the DD2, just a little shorter and can wear the same clothes, although sleeves and pant legs will run long. It also sounds like you can use DD2 heads and hands on the DDS. And here's the best part:

"Improve the ease of installing and removing the parts around the thigh. Each part also will be available later!"

"Each part also will be available later" Hopefully that includes interior parts.

Since there aren't any major changes to the exterior, I hope there have been some significant improvements on the inside. From the roughly translated text there is the glimmer of hope. We'll just have to wait and see what they look like (inside and out) once they hit the streets.

Well, I was told by Bailey at Tenshi no Sumika Torrance that the MDD underwent an unpublicized knee redesign. It could be that the knee joint used for the DDS is the same one as the MDD. All I know is that my MDD Namiko has been here since March and her knees haven't gotten floppy yet. However, my beef with the MDD is with other parts of her: arms, legs and torso. I do NOT like the non-contiguous skeleton. Pain in my ass.

If this is as your educated guesses are saying -- and of all of us, as a thoroughly elite vinyl doll hacker, you would be most qualified to make educated guesses about this body -- Namiko-tan is going to go through puberty as soon as the DDS body hits these shores. It would be nice to not have to mod Namiko's DDH-04 head to fit onto an Obitsu 50cm body, but just swap between her MDD body and her new DDS body. I still want an Obitsu 50cm, however! And if the DDS turns out to be more like MDD that's precisely what direction I'm going with Namiko.

Can't see anything as topping the various Obitsu 50cms for quality of workmanship and posing. Unless Volks has suddenly designed a doll that will stand on it's own without a stand (which I've been told is not a common occurrance with the DDs) I'll stick with the obitsu.

T2P: Don't regret your purchase of a 50cm obitsu - you will LOVE it! If I could I'd put ALL of my dolls on 50cm bodies...but some of them would look funny and the boys would get really pissed off hahaha

It looks alright, though I'm biased towards my 50cm Obitsu. It might be good if you want some body type variety - the 50cm Obitsu is so skinny she can wear Volks MSD clothes perfectly, so a girl with a wider circumference would at least make for a change. Maybe as a less poseable alternative to the VMF50 for those of use who don't understand shopping sites?

Oh I don't really regret ordering the 50cm obitsu at all, and since I'm keeping the default head on my 50cm that does indeed leave room for an anime styled sister ;)

One thing i'll be on look out for in the coming future are people upgrading their MDD (those who don't mind the height change that is) and selling off the old ones on DoA :) perhaps some deals to be had.

Wow!! How nice! I guess they're trying to compete with the Obitsu's awesome 50cm!

It says that the 50cm will be an entirely new frame and assembly type, not just a 'body variation.'
They said they strengthed the whole body, focusing especially on the elbow joints and hip joints. Also that all the joints will be substantially stronger and can even hold weapons without flopping. And that you can 'switch out' the parts easily (which they plan to sell separately, as K2 sama mentioned above---yay!), and that they may use this skeleton/frame for the other dolls in future. ^^ (Stronger DDs? ^^)

Interesting...you seem to have gotten more nuance out of the original language press release than Google Translate did. (not surprising!) Sounds like this might actually be the beginning of a "DD3" system, which is awesome. The arms in particular would be a lovely retrofit to my Yumiko-tan, especially when you consider that there had been an ill-conceived attempt by the person originally owned by her to seal her outer vinyl parts. There was permanent damage to her upper arms from that experiment ^^;;; I've been too chicken to use the "hidden joint" on Yumi's elbow. The double-jointing is an intelligent solution.

I hope they are thinking of selling replacement internal parts for this if this is a brand new "DD3" system. One of the overwhelming weaknesses of Volks over Obitsu is that if an internal part breaks in a DD, you are basically screwed and unless you can mend the skeleton you will have to buy a brand new body. Obitsu sells all internal parts as well as external vinyl parts. It would be nice if Volks was as doll hacker friendly as Obitsu. I have a Volks store within about an hour's drive of me, and somewhat accessible via public transit. Obitsu? Not so much.
