Hujoo heads--how much heat can they take?

Postby EAB » Mon Nov 26, 2012 1:50 pm

I hope this is the right place to post this.
My Hujoo baby Is came today. I want to make elf ears for her from Sculpey, if I can. I've cured Sculpey before by baking it at 275 for 10 minutes, and for boiling it for 10 minutes, but I've only boiled vinyl heads. Does anyone know if the abs plastic can stand this kind of heat without melting?
Thanks in advance. I'd hate to melt Is.

ABS is fine with boiling H20 temp.s (I've used it to fix a mould defect on one of my hujoos) but I've got a feeling 270F might be a tad high wrt it going squishy - if wiki is to be trusted Tg is at 105 °C (221 °F), so it'll probably be kinda soft at that temp and might warp under it's own weight (But not sure)

Crafty people say that 240C is best for actually fiddling with the stuff and getting it to stick to things, so you'd still be 100C short of runny plastic... argh sorry not a very helpful answer! I think you'd be best sticking to the boil cure method if possible since that definitely wont do anything to the ABS, you might get away with the oven but I'd be unwilling to risk it myself

Why not just use apoxy sculpt? No need for baking, and it cures hard as a rock. ^___^

I did use epoxy resin. I didn't have Apoxie Sculpt, but I had some gray two-part epoxy, so I used it. I found an excellent tutorial by desertmountainbear, and it worked like a charm. Is's elf ears are now on, sanded and painted with the first coat of gesso.
I'm glad to hear that the boiling method works, though. I'll keep that in mind for future reference.
Thanks, guys.
