Ok, back to the posing obitsu y'all were telling me about

Postby Dirili » Sun Jul 15, 2012 1:09 am

It was back in my introduction thread when I was talking about how I was looking for a model for my paintings, but hadn't had any luck, because 1/6th dolls are too small for clothes to fall and fold realistically on, no existing mannequins are posable enough, and *ahem* more realistic human sized alternatives are too expensive and too heavy to work.

So some of you were telling me that Obitsu are the best for posing, but that the 50cm or smaller bodies pose better than the 60s.

I've been staring at Junkyspot for a few days thinking. See though, the 60cm has a 3 part torso which seems like that would be good for some more natural posing... I especially tend to like drawing poses where people hunch forward, or arch backwards and other torso dependent poses. I don't see 3 part torsos in the others. Also don't want to go too small either and run back into the clothing thickness issue again.

So basically I'm asking for those of you that know... is the posing on the 60cm weak enough that I really should go down to 48 or 50?
Keep in mind, the poses aren't for photography, they are for pose reference for my paintings, so I just take photos to draw from. Because of that, it doesn't really matter if I have the figure lean against things or use other posing aids, or if I have to let the figure lie down and photograph it from a different angle to fake a standing pose.

Here's 60cm that are available:
http://www.junkyspot.com/obitsu60.html

and 48+50 available:
http://www.junkyspot.com/obitsu50.html

Also, I know it's a long shot, but anybody know of anyone wanting to get rid of an old one somewhere? Only places I've seen people selling pre-owned dolls are here and the other doll forum I've been on for a while, but neither one seems to have dolls for sale very often, much less something that I'm actually looking for.

Thanks again for all the help so far, and for the help I'll be getting in the future ^_^

Get the 50cm. Hands down! They have a special shoulder that actually can shrug and hunch! If you want more human proportions, get the 48cm one, if you want anime style long legs get the 50cm. You can get alternate chests to use for different looks too. I recommend separate heads and neck connectors for them if you want to swap chests, but I have trouble with the neck connector. For examples of the awesomeness of the 50cm, go check out MADh Vinyl. Prepare to be totally gobsmacked and hooked on the stories.

The additional posing that Kiki-chan78 does with the 3 part torso is caused by her actually taking the doll apart in some poses - this does work well. Also - if you go for the 60cm, the ball joint version looks prettier, but doesn't pose as well. The older style joints don't look as pretty but can really pose.

Obitsu are awesome!!

I have ball jointed 60cm Obitsu and she isn't a very good poser. Especially her knees. >.> I'm going to switch her ball joints for normal joints sometime in the future.

I thought my 60cm Obitsus were amazing actually, especially compared to the resin kids I have now. :) But I once held my friend's 50cm and yeah, she was even better. ^^

I got lucky and managed to snag a 50cm Obitsu off the DOA marketplace the other month. She's seriously amazing with posing (and OMG I just tried that shoulder-shrug trick and it worked! Who knew? lol). I used to own a 60cm Obitsu ball-joint version with two-part torso, and if I'm recalling correctly, I think the 50cm torso vinyl is actually softer/more flexible than the 60cm torso, I'm assuming to allow for the extra posing ability of the 50cm skeleton. I mean, I could be wrong about that, but I remember when taking her out of the box I was surprised at how soft she was, in comparison with my former 60cm.

ah, so even though the 50 cm torso is not 3 sectioned, the vinyl is not rigid, so it can bend?

Oh yeah, do there also happen to be hands with finger joints that fit obitsu anywhere? I've seen jointed finger hands, but not sure if any were compatible with obitsu.

The only jointed hands I've ever seen are resin, which means they're strung and are attached to wrists by elastic. Since Obitsu uses a skeletal system, offhand I'd say probably not. Then again, there are some pretty expert frankendolly creators on this forum. Perhaps someone has figured out a way to add jointed hands to Obitsu bodies (in which case, they are epic)?

Here's Zirconmermaid's tutorial on attaching resin hands to an Obitsu body: http://www.junkyspot.com/OBITSU/forums/ ... =26214&hl=
Jointed hands have the same attachment more or less, so the principle should be the same, I think.

Alright, you all have convinced me! I just placed my order for a 50cm female. I can't wait! Hopefully it will be here by the end of the week...

Now I need to find some jointed hands and a wig.

ooooooh - you are gonna be sooooooo addicted! You can't own just one 50cm obitsu! You think it's just a drawing model, but it will take over your mind and you'll name it and it will become the bestest thing you've ever purchased!

Go down to the section of the forum named MADh Vinyl....and be amazed! 90% of the dolls in there are 50cm obitsu.
