Random Observations/Questions from a First Time BJD Owner

Postby Vycem » Sat Jun 09, 2012 10:40 am

1. Wow, the clothes are so detailed and elaborate! It takes a serious chunk of time to dress her.

2. On the clothing, while I really appreciate how proportionate they are, why would you have a looping clasp system at that scale? I had to use the tip of my fingernails and a whole lot of patience!

3. OMG her hair is so soft. I want to pet it, but that seems creppy. Is all BJD hair this soft?

4. I got a BJD because the posing possibilities are endless...so why do I have such a hard time coming up with poses for her? I actually had to copy poses from the internet! Is this some sort of skills girls develop by virtue of playing with dolls when they were little?

She's totally awesome though!

1. They can be, they can also be very simple. Then there are the absolutely insane outfits. ^__^

2. Some of us are VERY detail oriented. When I make clothes for my dolls, I want them to be made as well as the clothes I make for people. I do use velcro, but generally only on inside layers where it wouldn't be seen.

3. Depends on what kind of wig you have. Kiki swears by Monique Gold, and they are SOOOOO soft. Doll wigs are like people wigs, sometimes the cheap ones feel REALLY cheap.

4. I don't know. I guess it's like people, some just instinctively know how to pose for photos. I have a friend who never just smiles for the camera, they pose. They know how they will look and try to put themselves in a way that they will look best. As far as dolls... depends on the doll. I LOVE my BBB Espree, but he's not winning any posing contests, he sits very nicely. My AoD however, I can make him stand hunched over without any extra support, he's a champ!

1. Its like cosplay. sometimes its simple, sometimes its an elaborate piece with tiny little details. Not all of us sew well(I mostly try anf get away by combining what i know how to sew). Some folks like me buy some article of clothing and make others and bluff/hide where needed. A lot would depend on what you think would work for your doll's personality

2. I work with tiny plastic stud buttons and zippers

3. Monique wigs too. They have the right color as well as my doll's default wig (The Lottie, no other company comes close). I like to pet her on the head too....

4. I don't go and think as to how to pose a doll. I tend to look at the background or object and then pose them to interact with or in said environment according to said doll's personality (which involves a lot of arms flailing about for a hyperactive doll) or role. I can have one background/prop and 6 dolls and for some reason 1-2 just refuse to interact with said background (this week is a giant Gundam head). For me I suppose I try to keep an element of fun and 'play' to it, otherwise it seems like too much work for my short attention span.

1. They are but they also are so effing expensive sometimes too....Hence why with dolliehs comes sewing machines, needles ect. (My parents are getting me a sewing machine this year for Xmas.)

2. Yeah some do...I mainly use snaps because they're easier to manage and look a lot better then velcro personally....Plus they don't get caught on long wigs.

3. Go right ahead! I still pet Riven's head after he got his wig. It's so soft and fuzzeh!

4. Sometimes it happens....For my Obitsu's posing just for fun and to see how far they go helps...Also some of their characters are martial artists so there's a lot of that...

When it comes to posing, I find it helps to think about what your dollieh might be thinking or saying to you. Imagining their personality really helps, methinks. c: Congrats on your first BJD!! The more you play with your new girl, the more comfortable and familiar you'll become with her. :D Then you'll know just how to make her look great!

As for pics, I'll wait into her head upgrade at the end of the month... Maybe I'll do a before and after and show of OlaniKodomo's work!
