Testor's Dullcoat will work. It can yellow over time, but it does protect the vinyl from staining. You need to seal the entire head before any paint is applied. There are other options as well, Vallejo Matte Spray is good too. Ask and check in the tips and tricks section. If you do not seal the entire head there is a very real possibility of color bleeding from the painted areas into the unsealed sections. Also - before you seal the head you should wash it in Dawn dish soap and let it dry throroughly. Any dirt or oils on the head can lead to flaking faceups later.

I was under the impression that Testor's was no good, and was in fact not safe for vinyl! It's good to know that that is incorrect. I tested out the other spray by Testor's, Model Masters on her headcap today because I thought that I couldn't use the Dullcote, and I hadn't heard anything about whether it was safe or not for vinyl. The flat did not work out, apparently, the inside of her headcap is shiny now!

tl;dr I'm glad you told me Testor's was okay! I thought it wasn't. I'll still probably end up buying MSC from Junky Spot, hopefully he's not out of stock yet.

Hazel's first faceup was done with Testor's. The only problem with it is the yellowing. That's why it isn't recommended. Emory has all three recommended sprays in stock, I checked. Shiny coating is usually caused by putting it on too thickly! Hold the head at arms length, spray in short, side to side, bursts. I know there are good tutorials here and at Junkyspot about it. And then there is this awesome book:

I see what you did there. :o

I'm so glad to know that Testor's IS safe, I can get that at Hobby Lobby and get started on her face-up sooner! I have a bit of a conundrum, though-- I live on the coast, where humidity is basically unavoidable any time of the year. Is there any advice that can be given other than "wait for a less humid day to spray"? Because of where I live those days are few. Would doing it in my kitchen over the stove with the intake fan on be a bad idea? XD

Yes, bad idea. You don't want to be spraying that stuff anywhere near where you prepare food.

Talking of sprays - I've had some success with Tamiya Color clear matt (Is it actually a safe one to use on vinyl/resin? I've only sprayed it on ABS so far)
Crazy Mulitverse Crew: Drax, Jareth, Jerome, Elrana Milenkova, The Thin White Duke, Vasily Lupandin, Ramin Aiphos, Theta Sigma, Aiko Koyame, Lord Havelock Vetinari, Dr Nicholas Rush, Anon., Nyta Kinall, Otto Kreiner, That Demon, Sasu, Yaya, Ombre
...reshelling Szesil Markowski and Garan Idasson

Yes. What I do when I need to spray and the weather isn't cooperating(and this is still pretty darn stupid of me) is I spray in the bathroom where we have a very good exhaust system and where I can seal it off from the rest of the living quarters. After I'm done spraying I then leave the room locked up for at least 45 minutes with the exhaust still running to make sure all the air as cycled through. Also, anytime I spray I make sure I'm wearing a very good respirator. I don't mean those paper masks. I mean a cannister respirator which cost significantly more but are well worth the investment. They can be found at home improvement stores. Also, make sure the cannister are for chemical use. Some are meant for chemical fumes, others are meant for toxic particals. I have different ones that are appropriate for different kinds of projects.

I had really meant any room with a fan that sucks up things, like famedglory said above. X3 I realize now what horrible phrasing I had used.

She is now not totally naked, and has herself a cute little attempt at a shirt. I feel like I need to re-do the sleeves before I show it off, though. X3

I can't wait, either! The rain from earlier this week unfortunately has returned today, much to my chagrin. ): I'm not sure how much longer I can wait to do her face-up!

I also had a minor set back with her outfit, despite being white on the backside of the fabric, the pink still managed to stain through. ): I managed to get most of the staining off with a magic eraser, but some of the spots are being stubborn. Meanwhile, it's time for a vinegar bath for that fabric!
