Cutting Eye Holes...

Postby magkelly » Fri Jan 27, 2012 4:13 am

Anyone know anyone who does an excellent job of cutting out eye holes and replacing painted eyes with glass ones? I've heard there are people out there but I'll be darned if I can find anyone and I'm thinking I might like to take a couple of the 16" fashion doll heads and have glass eyes or plastic eyes put into them. I've always wanted to do that have a set of 16" Mel Odom or Tonner dolls with real eyes but I don't trust myself to do the job. I tried it once and I totally ruined a Gene head.

I can do it on 1/4 or 1/3 heads but not 1/6.. I'd probably wreck the poor thing. :(

Their heads are bigger than Barbie type dolls, more Moxie Teenz sized, though a bit smaller. I chose the two Odom dolls because they have bigger stylized eye sockets than my Tonners generally do and I thought it would be easier. Give me a day and I'll take some pics with a ruler next to them for comparison. I had to put all the doll stuff away for a day or so. I'm moving stuff around so I can put together an Ikea bed frame. Had to have some room. I'm getting a couple of bookcases from Walmart, under bed boxes, and my old trunk from my parent's closet too in a few days. We're finally getting organized around here. New places to organize books and display dollies, a very good thing!!!

Charie Wilson cut eyeholes and inserted eyes into my Ellowyne Wilde and my 60 cm Obitsu. Both are bad dolls that wear wigs.

A few years ago someone gave me a big box of project Gene dolls from Ashton Drake. Up till then the only Mel Odom dolls I had were the newer ones that came from Integrity. I say project Gene dolls because none of them were in exactly great shape. The woman I got them from had tried to repaint and re-root or re-wig them and the results were not exactly, um, stunning. I salvaged a couple of Violet dolls that were not too bad and that still had their original hair and most of their original face paint. But in the box there were several Gene and Madra dolls that had been scalped and that had such bad face paint that about the only thing I could do with them was to totally wipe the paint on them and start over from scratch. I did most of them but I still have two heads, one from a Gene and another from a Madra that I'm pretty much going to have to do the whole thing with, hair, face, everything. I don't know there's something about these particular dolls that just makes me wonder what they'd look like with real eyes? Anyway that's the idea. Depending upon what the person above asks I might decide to do it, create glass-eyed versions of Gene and Madra to play with and display.

I might experiment with cutting eyeholes in one of the spare Monster heads I have...
I have so many dolls that I can't fit all their names in my signature anymore. @__@

This gives me the idea to practice on some spare barbie heads.
And when I get off this laptop I will do just that :)

Now where did I put that exacto knife...

Well, end result here was I didn't go for it. What she wanted was reasonable but it involved taking off all eye paint, then cutting off the top of the skulls and I wasn't into doing that. Not with Gene dolls. I think that if she had cut the eye holes I could have put the eyes in okay sans skull surgery. I've done it with a Liv and a MT. It wouldn't have been easy but I could have done it. But she didn't want to go that route so that's that.
