Haircuts, Pullip clones, and a bunch of baldies [img heavy]

Postby Pandor » Thu Sep 08, 2011 10:39 pm

Soooo I got around to cutting Cybil and Cheryl's hair, painting my Pullip clones and general other miscellany...

Cybil:
Image
I guess I'm satisfied with how her hair turned out... for now, I guess.
Image
Finding her a light blue cop shirt is turning out to be a pain, tho. May have to try to make one. :I

Cheryl:
Image
So cute! >w<
Image
Wiff her papa. :3 <3

Soon-to-be-Lisa:
Image
This ZC Girl head on a Liv body is soon to become Lisa Garland (char ref: http://silenthill.wikia.com/wiki/Lisa_Garland ), who is supposedly 'blonde', but never really looks like it in game, so I'm sticking with the red hair. :P
Image
Gonna wipe that stock face soon... guess I just wanted a pic for scrapbook type purposes. :B

Heather Mason:
Image
I painted her with the other batch I posted a while ago, and held off on posting her (and the rest of the baldies below) because I thought I'd get around to doing some how-they'll-look-with-hair mock ups in SAI or something. Never did. :P So here she is now.

Hal/Vladi Zarth:

I was going to reroot him, but...

John's acrylic paint hair-tinting method did wonders on him! Hal here is mid-braiding for my hair-wavifying attempt... Hope the color will hold up...

Cloney luv:
Image
Their luv iz so tru! :3

So, um, yeah. All my pullips and p-clones and other big-headed 1/6th scale dolls inhabit the Poke-verse. I wanna do a photostory about their crazy-ass region sometime... really the only thing holding me back right now is I don't have a Taeyang-sized white lab coat for the traditional Poke-introduction... :P

Nurse Joy:
Image
*sigh* I kinda really suck at pullip/sd-style face-ups. :/ I'll probably redo both Joy and Jenny later, with more transparencies and blending and what-not going on... but for now they are done and I've had enough. :| This particular clone was a butt to paint, because the sculpt of her lips kinda really sucks. I was going to try craving some definition into them, but I wussed out.
Image
"This fucking wig--! D:< " I need to figure out how I'm going to do those hair-loopies still... :|

Officer Jenny:
Image
I started with watercolor pencils and then decided to do acrylic too and then things got crazy.
Image
Temporary eyes and wig are temporary... tho she does look kind of insane and awesome with them...
Image
Yeaaahh... this Jenny is pretty much batshit insane, I think. :) <3

Baldies from the previous batch that I didn't upload due to the reason mentioned above :B :
Citan Uzuki:

(char ref: http://xenosaga.wikia.com/wiki/Citan_Uzuki )

Katara:
Image
Image
Image
(char ref: http://avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Katara ) Not sure what hair/outfit I'll be going for with her, leaning towards the Fire Nation outfit... but she's such a bitch in Book 3 that I just don't know. :/

Martha Jones WIP:

Neck Join pic for John:

As you can see, it's not great from the side. But her hair hides it well. (I forget if there were other things I said I was going to photograph for you... D: )

Okay, that's all for now.

This may sound weird but I love, love how you draw your eyebrows.
I'm mostly on Tumblr now.

Lamia of the Dark: heehee, thanks! :) I'm kinda afraid to do an inventory at this point, tho... ^^;

Gift_in_Edge: Thank you! :D I think I've gotten fairly decent at eyebrows lately. :)

maywong: Thank you :)

I have been meaning to ask in general, how do you cut/style your doll hair? Do you practice first, look for hairstyles in magazines, hair a stylist, etc. I have tried to cut my Liv doll wig before but then it came out crooked so I trimmed and it became really short. Since then I have been scared to cut again. It is all just trial and error?

I am by no means a master at haircutting/styling, but I can give you a few basic tips I think. ^^;

-get some hair cutting scissors! And don't use them for cutting anything but hair! You can find an inexpensive pair in the cosmetics/haircare section of pretty much any store that has a section like that. I think I got my pair at Dollar General. :P

-dampen the hair before cutting. If it's slightly wet (not sopping) you'll have more control over what you cut. (Advice I really should take more often myself!)

-less is more, try not to cut too much off too quickly so you have a nice margin for error.

-have a clear idea of what you're going for. DO get yourself some reference pics. (Cybil and Cheryl are both video game characters, so I used their cut scene renders as my reference.)

-practice, practice, practice! Show those unwanted fashionista heads no mercy! Go wild on those thrift store dolls! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!

-don't be afraid to keep looking and asking for advice, you never know where or when an excellent tip will show up!

-...or just get your more talented little siblings* to do it for you. :P
(*they make it look so easy, it's not fair. ._. )

As for styling, I recommend reading up on hot water perms. There should be several tutorials online... actually, now that I think of it, I remember one haircutting tut I read when I first got into custom dolls. Let me see if I can find it...
Nope, can't find it. :/ But here's another one I remember seeing a while ago: http://www.dolls-n-daggers.com/Dolls/OOAKtipshair.php

Thanks for all those wonderful tips, Pandor. I love the website you provided. That website also had some helpful links. I didn't realize it at first, but later realised that your characters are Silent Hill characters. One of my favourite games. I totally would love to see your Lisa when you are done.

You have Martha. And Katara. I've been toying with the idea of doing Avatar dolls myself; the main reason I held off is that I want magnetic Obitsus for all of them, so they can hold crazy bending poses, and I don't think Marrone 25cms or boys are even a thing that exists, much less a thing that I could actually attain. And I really want a Martha, too, but the official figures wouldn't be in-scale with the Ten and Amy I have already.

Cheryl looks so cute. For some reason she reminds me of a 1/6 Gretel sculpt.
