Windfall!

Postby fleacollar999 » Wed Aug 31, 2011 8:17 pm

I just suddenly came into enough money to buy the doll I've been eying.... The only problem is convincing my parents that a doll isn't "a stupid waste of money".

Any suggestions/ideas on how to broach this topic with my parents? Do YOU think buying dolls is a waste of money?

I mean, it's my money, I just want to have their approval before I spend like $200 on a doll. Does that make sense?

Anyways, thanks for reading!

Congratulations!! :hugs: That's wonderful for you!!!

Hmmmm.......my parents like my dolls, so I've never had that problem, but I know we definitely learned how to sew clothing and do faceups because of our dolls. Maybe you can tell your parents that having a BJD can teach you sewing skills or painting skills. They're beautiful and can be useful as a learning tool. ^^

Can't hurt, ne? ^^

Spend it on cocaine instead, jk.

Tell them you've decided on this as a hobby and you can show them what other people have done with their dolls. On one hand you'll learn all sorts of "useful" skills like sewing and on the other it gives you a baby that doesn't do sh*t and you can put it away in a box.

Depending on age, my response would go four ways.

1. Minor living under their roof: Approach respectfully and explain the hobby in a way that makes you seem artsy and intelligent. Parents are probably more likely to listen if their kid isn't squealing and gushing like a three year old. You can squeal after you get your doll. hehehe

2. Just turned 18 and living under their roof: Approach respectfully, but also remind them you're an adult now and would like the freedom to make your own decisions with your own money. It's all part of growing up, and you're excited to be doing responsible things like buying stuff when you GET the money. Tell them you're not charging it or going into debt, and it's something you really want and have saved for. Remind them really really politely, of course, lest they throw you out on your keester, then your money becomes living expenses.

3. 19-24 and living under their roof: Just buy what you want. If they don't like it, respectfully remind them you're an adult and are capable of making your own decisions at this point in your young adult life.

4. 25 and older: buy the doll. Move out. Get a cat. Get more dolls. More cats. Become a crazy cat lady. Have cats removed by health department. Move back in with parents. Get another doll... politely explain to parents they're to replace the cats the health department stole away from you... it broke your heart, and you're sad.

Ok, I got silly at the end.

Skip the cats, dogs for life! :P
A hobby isn't supposed to leave you wistful, regretful and vaguely disappointed. BJD collecting is as customizable as the dolls themselves. Do whatever pleases you the most, because otherwise, why do it at all? All for the 'Gram Bitches love the 'Gram.

@SetsunaKou and DollyKim-- Good ideas! I'll try that! :)

@Trethowan-- I'm 20 and living in the dorms at college, so I suppose the 19-24 applies to me... Your advice is really good! Except for maybe the 25 and Older bit, but I suspect that will happen to me when I move out anyways ;)

@AlmySidaKay-- I must respectfully disagree with you. (It's not that I dislike dogs, it's that I like cats more)

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate your advice and you all had some very good ideas!

Hehehe... Well, if you're 20 and live in a dorm, I'd say you're definitely past the point of getting parental ...ah, not consent, but approval, for private/personal decisions. Every situation is different, though. My parents were both manipulative and controlling, so my fight for independence was a long, hard-won (but respectful) battle.

ps. you don't want to become a crazy-cat lady? you suuuuurrreeee? hehehehehehe

Bwahahahahah! That's so great.

I'm already at the crazy cat lady part, hopefully the other steps aren't fulfilled! xD

I don't see why you'd need parental approval to buy something, unless they're the ones funding your purchase.
I have so many dolls that I can't fit all their names in my signature anymore. @__@
