NaNoWriMo and AI - AN UPDATE

The place for those OT discussions that you just HAVE to share in a doll themed forum.

"Writing is just so hard!" YEAH. WE KNOW. "I wish writing wasn't so much work!" Trust me, so do we. "Why do I have to actually write the story myself?" BECAUSE THAT'S HOW WRITING WORKS.

But it's an enjoyable hard. It makes me think the people who complain have never enjoyed the feeling of accomplishing something themselves and/or making something with their own two hands so they don't know the value of it. It's like the people coming to the doll boards not understanding why commissions cost money or people won't just help them but they can't articulate what kind of help they want. This isn't the mind reading forum.

The future will belong to the literate.

"Ableist" my rosy red rear. That's like saying it's "ableist" to demand that someone be able to play a violin competently in order to be in an orchestra. Or it's "ableist" that someone be a top athlete in order to be in the Olympics.

I wrote a pep talk long ago. I wrote them and demanded it be taken down. Have not heard from them.

My daughter, who actually does have some of the disabilities NaNoWriMo is claiming they are advocating for by allowing entire novels to be written by their sponsor's AI program, is PISSED AS HELL at them for their verbiage and use of people with disabilities to justify their greed. (She stopped participating in the competition when the grooming issues came to light.)

I have ADHD and autism. I sometimes couldn't sit and concentrate on a task if you held a gun to my head. But I have three external hard drives of documents and countless notebooks and binders that prove I AM capable of writing 40,000+ words in a month. I used to shell out thousands of words a WEEK when I wasn't working. I've also got more health issues than you can shake a stick at. "Disabled people can't write, so we need to let them use a computer to write down them" is such a bad take it makes me want to write a novel out of sheer damn spite.

My brain injury would like to stick the composition book it just filled 37 pages of this past week and stick it where the AI's sun doesn't shine, after I copy out this last thing because I think I have something there.

I'm also looking for something to take the place of my old photo editing software but most of my price range is AI (training) included. Um, no.

So they got an AI sponsor? So it's alllll about money, again. Man, I cannot wait until all these techbros with their glorified chat bots end up completely broke because running these AIs is so freaking expensive.

I don't really have all that much to add to the conversation other than to agree with all the above. I've done NaNo a few times and even was a regional rep the first time. It was fun then, but now it's sunk lower than sad. Having 3 diagnosed invisible disabilities and possibly more, I'm really offended by being called 'ableist' just because I don't agree with their paid-for policy.

I think AI could be useful in many ways, but mostly it just seems to be used for its worst possibilities.
Just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD.

What I was going to say, only not as well worded.

And ditto on the disability comments. I used to have tons of books of story laying around, and still have a lot of files and Dreamwidth accounts full of stuff that I wrote alone or with friends (many of whom also have autism and other health things).
I am Tam. Tam I am. I like green eggs, but I don't like ham. :D

I tried linking one of my adopted click pets here, but the board wouldn't let me. :/

Misty does have a way with words.

Well I finished my latest draft, it needs at least one more before making its debut. Just gonna say it felt so spiritually and physically good to just write and get that story out. I wish I could tap in to that more often because I have a pile of notes of different stories I'd at least like to get basic drafts of.

As I tell a lot of the kids on my internet lawn write the parts you can and try to make as detailed notes as possible for the parts that aren't ready yet in case someone else can do something with them. I keep what I call a 'tornado of thought' book where everything goes in. It's a writer's journal, smash book, and a bit of a commonplace book (for shorter pieces) all in one. That alone has been very helpful with coming up and keeping track of stuff. https://littlewalken.tumblr.com/post/73 ... of-thought
