Well, I decided to try a couple of those Eva BJD ABS plastic BJDs. The last one arrived today. And they are freaking adorbs. Very sturdy as far as I can tell. Costume quality is mixed. There are a couple different faces. The heads do not open on most, so you can't change the eyes on a lot of them.

Got this one. The ears are glued on, and are very, very nice! Much better than the glue-on Obitsu elf ears. The costume quality is meh, the wig is lovely, the faceup is better than shown.

Got this one.

The ears are cast on the doll, the articulation is really good, the faceup is much better than shown.

Got a variation on this doll, same head. OMG it is cute in person, the articulation isn't quite as good as the others but the face makes up for it. Faceup is much, much, much better than shown, there was even some fantasy flower action going on.

I really like these things, and I think they are a great entry level for someone not sure if they want to commit to the 60 cm size. Plus they seem to be sturdy enough for kids to play with. I'd search carefully for ones with headcaps though, because changing eyes is going to be a challenge--or else you'll have to cut your own headcap. That can be done, but probably not unless you're really experienced.

The heads don't open...So are they strung or use some kind of mechanical joints?
They are pretty cute.

They have a neck peg, sort of like Barbie dolls (or Obitsu 60cm). Not strung. They're really sturdy but without clothing on, they're not very pretty aesthetically.

With clothes, they're great! It's mainly the shoulders/arms that look rather awkward, but cover them up with clothing and they're fine. :) Especially at only $40-$50 for a nude doll.

Better pics of the shape of this probably authentic natural form 1877-1883 silk dress. It's definitely old and whomever it was made for was skinny.

Fabulous, Dollykim! And yes, I have yet to see a Victorian era outfit larger than about a size 2. LOL. I don't know what happened with the wardrobes of all those plump dowagers!

The most sensible I have heard about large clothes is they were recut in to garments for smaller people, children, or dolls.

Don't forget to take the time period's use of corsets into account. That is a gorgeous dress, though!

There ARE some with heads that open, but you have to search for them carefully--and don't rely on pictures showing what looks like headcap lines, because those are just molded in where a headcap WOULD be if you decided to cut into the head yourself.

For the rest, what Setsunakoa and Zirc said: the head is on a peg, like a Barbie, and while it is POSSIBLE you could manuever to get new eyes in--after all, that's what they do at the factory--it would be a challenge.

They are a mechanical joint, not unlike action figures or the Hujoo Action Girl body. And they really, really need clothing because otherwise they look pretty freaky. But once clothed, the bodies move and pose really well.

THIS one appears to have a headcap. It's the face I like best, and I still have some birthday money, so I'm going to see if she does. If she doesn't, I have plans for a charity auction doll anyway!

THis one appears to have a faceplate!

Corset or not whomever wore the dress had tiny arms. I have a tiny ring size and baby hands but even with the buttons opened I can't get in to the sleeves. There's a same era sleeve from grandma's hoard that's just as tiny but no buttons.

I don't see myself in something like this but it would be lovely to copy for a doll. The fabric looks so modern. If any of y'all know someone who studies or makes historical or steampunk clothing they are welcome to the dress, I don't want the responsibility of caring for it.

If you don't find any takers here, I'm in a FB group for JordonCon costumers, and several of them are historical fashion fans and a couple are even experts. I could ask if anyone is interested in the outfit.
