Yes, that's a laurel wreath, and it's an Italian tradition! When someone graduates his/her friends (or family) gifts him/her a laurel wreath, to strut around with like a poet laureate or a roman emperor
Mainly Italian Literature, with some Linguistic, History and finally Anglo-American Literature as optional subject.
it reminds me a comic show with a line that sounded like "Doctor, call me a doctor in Medicine"!
