Stressed and Strained

Postby Kirahfaye » Fri Oct 17, 2014 6:02 am

I try not to share problems, but this past week has been horrific. Last week I had a D&C and was thrilled to find out by the end of the week that it was simply pollups and nothing cancerous and we were all looking forward to my daughter getting her service dog, although we were literally stunned at the cost involved. Then the dog (a sweet, but large Aussie/Bernard mix) actually triggered a severe anxiety attack in Joy and we had to return her the next day. Joy is still dealing with the anxiety - which loops around and causes more anxiety. Her nurse upped her medicine some (and gave us the names of a couple therapists for her to see), but it will still take a bit of time for her to really see any affect.

And on top of that, we've been having a rough time of it financially lately. Our daughter owns the majority of the house and we make mortgage payments to her, which is her only form of income right now. We haven't been able to pay her the last couple of months because repairs to the house have cost us over $1500.00 this year - none of which either warranted or was covered by our insurance.... and now our property taxes are due next month....

And it looks like the job my husband had applied for (a big promotion) at another state university must have fallen through because despite the fact that he had the recommendation of three top administrators he has yet to be called in for an interview even though the search period ended last month. I wish I could find a way to work from home, but I have sold a couple of dolls (at a loss) to help out.

So, yeah. I'm feeling stressed and strained. Sorry to dump on y'all, but I it's good to simply talk about it sometimes.

Aye. House repairs are always a massive drain. Universities are a pain in the rear to work for, too. They're sluggish about getting around to new hires. The university my husband used to teach for would complain about being understaffed but do nothing about it until it was too late to hire anyone for that semester. If they did ever manage to post a job opening they'd dick around for so long that it would be another semester before they finished interviews, then they'd maybe start calling interviewees, and then after more dawdling they'd make their choice. Generally job-seeking professors have already gotten jobs at better run colleges. It's pretty ridiculous. Some colleges are well run, and some are run by idiots who care more about their raging egos than they do actually running the place. Maybe they've just not gotten around to calling interviews yet. That or they opened it up because they're legally required but already had an in-house choice. /sigh. Sorry this is happening. It's a pain.

Jeff is on the hiring board for his department at the college he works at now, so he knows how it can sometimes be. And since his equal at the university was applying for the same promotion, it's very possible they were just following procedure. So far there's been no word, so anything is possible. Jeff is overworked with no help of his own and no assurance he'll have a job when his school merges with another next year. He doesn't want to work in the private sector, but he can make a lot more there than in the university system.... Something has to give.

His former boss (whose job was going to be disolved when the merge happens) took a job in CA and was sending Jeff job openings in the state. Yeah... Since I lived in LA, San Diego and San Francisco, I told Jeff to check the housing prices. hahaha. No...

So sorry that you're going through this all.
Is the dog returned for good, or will she give it another try later?

Joy is planning on getting a 3 year old chihuahua mix named Sleepy (yep, there were enough babies to name the entire cast of dwarves), either Monday or Tuesday. Sleepy has been used mostly as a therapy dog with children, but the director believes he will make a great PSD. As soon as Joy sits down on the floor he's in her lap and doesn't want to leave. :D

That is horrible news to hear except about Sleepy! Hang tight, and I hope everything turns around for you soon. Until then, it's good to have a place to vent...it can be so stressful living in that kind of situation and even worse if you try to bottle it all up. :(

I feel the job pain. I applied for a better job where I'm at, and I was in the top three final candidates. Then there was a delay while they got approval to give the chosen candidate a raise when suddenly we got told that the job was being posted as open to the public and none of us got it. Based on some things I heard said I believe that it was all political because one of the final three has been around for a long time, but she's not a team player. She's all about herself and how good she looks and is. I think there was pressure to give her the job because of seniority, and the person who was making the choice didn't want her, so the only option was giving it to none of us.

I'm leaving out some details that would be...unwise to publically write, but that's the crux of it. And lets just say I'm fairly certain that I was the final candidate chosen :( Sigh....internal politics sucks.
