Doctor Who - Capaldoc has landed!

Postby Vetinari » Sat Aug 30, 2014 9:11 pm

Well I figured since we've already got a Doctor Who merch thread, people on here might like to talk more about the show itself!

Um perhaps inevitably I'm going to kick-off with my thoughts on the 1st two eps of the newest series.

Capaldi - wow, breath of fresh air here, he's playing the role much more dryly than Smith and Tennant did. I had high hopes since his reveal last august when he emerged clutching his lapels William Hartnell style! Yep he's proven excellent so far, as expected. I just hope he gets given scripts that match his acting ability, since I personally think Smith had great potential, but was let down by the writing.

Minor Spoiler Warnings for those who haven't yet seen eps 1&2 of series 8!

Deep Breath:
I really liked the slower pacing of this episode, and the tonal shift to a more considered style overall. Though weirdly despite the film director at the helm the pacing was a bit off, and certain shots just didn't work for me. I thought the script was passable, but a bit of a poor introduction!

As I said earlier, I adore Capaldi already - and his performance in this episode, especially all of the subtle and not so subtle nods to Pertwee, T.Baker, Smith, Tennant et al in his performance (that for the most part wasn't scripted) ...yea wow. And when his Doctor inevitably settled in - yea I loved the way he acted both the restaurant and scotch scenes. The script was v.v.Smith-era and I could easily picture how Smith would have read a lot of the lines compared to Capaldi. The scene with the tramp jarred slightly, but in a good way. I think that both Smith/Tennant would have acted up the "comedy" there quite a bit more, Capaldi played relatively straight/Tucker-esque/damned near terrifying at times that I can almost imagine that he mugged the poor man for his clothes in his post-regenerative madness!

Jenna Coleman also fabulous now that she's got a bit more to play with. But I don't like all of these new personality traits that Moffat has just declared that she has all of a sudden, or her inability to accept Capaldoc throughout the episode, not just at the beginning, which at least is understandable. After all knowing about death (read regeneration) rationally is one thing, but actually having it directly effect you is a rather different kettle of fish. But yea really dislike the sudden addition of narcissim, passive aggressive and control freak, to her personality. I think it should be a case of show not tell when it comes to personalities and drama; Moffat just Told us that she suddenly has all of these (often viewed as negative) traits.

Into The Dalek:
...And yea Capaldi just reconfirms how magnificent he could be given the chance I really hope this tonal shift in the Doctor's portrayal sticks! Very amused when I read that Moffat described the Doctor as "A raging Billy Connelly" to the scriptwriter! Loved the rather filthy joke about proctologists and the rather cold/alien treatment of Journey during the opening scene and the line: "He's the top layer if you want to say a word"

I thought the episode itself was v.reminiscent of both Dalek and The Invisible Enemy with plenty of subtle, but not over the top (unlike in the recent past), nods to past adventures.

And Zawe Ashton guest starred - I was surprised that they managed to get her to be honest, and yea she's one of my top candidates for Doc13...

Right I suspect this opening post has meandered/turned into something stupidly long...

I'm liking Capaldi a lot, and the lady with the umbrella and her thing. I have to check my DVDs to see if she's been on the show before.

...Yea I've rewatched the 1st two episodes of series 8 so many times now...

Yea I've loved Michelle Gomez in everything I've seen her in, she's spectacularly mad in Green Wing! ...But I'm kinda dreading the resolution of Missy's arc - I really hope it isn't yet another, slightly sexist, nonsensical "mystery woman destroys time cos she's a woman" plot... But I'm not hoping too much - since Moffat can't seem to resist those...

I'm loving Capaldi's choice with his more subdued acting style (though I've noticed that the camera doesn't quite seem to linger on him long enough at times to catch all of the subtler facial expressions, since they're still getting used to the tone themselves and treating the show as if it was the louder/more exuberant in style Tennant/Smith in the role).

And yea I'll be honest - I've got the leaked Doctor Who scripts, but I'm only reading theem after the show is aired! So I've been comparing the scripts to the finished product. In the case of Deep Breath I kinda think the script was better than the finished episode, even with Capaldi's amazing performance the tone was just a bit too all over the place! Into The Dalek though is an example of a mediocre script that's been massively improved by the performance of the cast - Capaldi in particular!

So caught ep 2 tonight (missed it last night). Glad they've ditched the PSA to teen fans that it's OK to like an older Doctor that spoiled the first episode somewhat (why the Matt Smith cameo? Why?! Other than as aforementioned PSA). It's a bit odd that given how much it was hammered in ep1 it was completely dropped in ep2, but I am NOT complaining that it was.

Utterly loving Capaldi as the Doctor so far - his Doctor's coming across with more depth, more like a real person than a caricature than especially Smith, but Tennant also to a degree. They really do need to capture more of his facial expressions though (and I mean you can't make a reference to angry eyebrows and then not give them more screen time. OK - I now have a bizarre mental image of a Capaldi/Penfold (from Dangermouse) mash up in my mind).

If Missy turns out to be another version of River Song I will hunt Moffat down and slap him silly. Likewise the "mystery woman destroys time cos she's a woman". I do kinda like the ideas that have been floating around that she's actually the Rani; or the Master regenerated as a woman. But there was also a character called Missy in Nightmare in Silver...

And I've now completely forgotten what else I was going to say.

Stormlight: Um... I think you can buy individual eps at a (fairly extortionate) rate from amazon.com or maybe itunes? Argh sorry I've heard that US-viewers have it a bit odd this year!

Yep I utterly hated the cameo/utter destruction of Clara's character just to make a point to the so-called "fangirls". Let's be honest, this myth of female fans hating Capaldi just because of his age? Utter utter crap. Indeed the people who like Capaldoc the least from what I've seen are the die-hard fanboys who can't stand that he's suddenly lost his "heroic" nature. Not sure what show they've been watching these past couple of weeks!

Yea I'm feeling incredibly hopeful for Capaldoc right now (though then again I felt the same way when Smith's first series aired..) I just really hope that the scripts actually do reflect the tone that he's trying to get across.

Haha! Yea I utterly agree there about slapping The Moff if he uses yet another over the top, sexist as all hell, nonsensical finale... I wouldn't mind if Missy was another Timelord - though I'd kinda hate that the Master would feel the need to rename himself because he'd ended up female - seriously The Master sounds like a gender-neutral name to me despite what the "fanboys" say...

Not entirely convinced by the very on the nose title sequence, the clocks/clockwork all seems v.cliche to me...

...Also noticed a midlly odd thing that I wouldn't have without the script - the secretary who's unsuccessfully trying to flirt with Danny is in the script described as quite a bit older... Um casting director? WTH? She looked about the same age as him there?

I agree that The Master would work as a title/name just as well if they happened to regenerate as female. I think I'm mostly being amused by the thought of them deciding to call themselves something as fussy-sounding as Missy.

I know what else I was going to say. Aircon/tumbledryer hoses? Really? At least do a better job of disguising them! (But does take me back to classic Who ;) )

Haha! Yea I was feeling rather nostalgic with all the tubing/corridors!

...Yea apologies about the rather ranty tone of the last post induced by the fandom of the show... I have a love/loathe relationship with the big Who-forum GallifreyBase. On the one hand it's a great place to be really nerdy about the show, on the other it's full of fans who I really think shouldn't be watching the show; since they appear to be incredibly bigotted!

Edit:
Also I do wonder how the Doctor's face is going to be addressed - since we all know Moffat, he wont be able to resist giving some form of explanation!

I know RTD had an idea with Caecilius/Frobisher that had something to do with the universe/time fixing itself after the Doctor bypassed a fixed point. But I suspect Moffat will complicate the explanation!

I just really really hope that against all expectation, John "was a good man" Frobisher ends up being referenced (and I don't mean the penguin!). Frobisher as a character was so complex/nuanced, Capaldi's performance in COE was masterful. I think it'd be a crime if that was ignored. (...And yea I'd love to see Captain Jack's reaction to Twelve... )

I know what you mean about that sort of fan - they're why I tend to avoid fan forums ;)

I don't get why people say <actor> isn't the Dr. This is a character who changes personality each time they change looks after all. I understand they might not like a particular actor's Dr, but that's hardly the same thing.

I fear we are going to get a cumbersome, complicated explanation about the face, based on the "why did I choose this face" speech from episode 1, especially the "who frowned these lines" bit.

The next episode looks like it's going to be hilarious. "I don't need a sword. This is my spoon"
