Total Crochet newb

I am a total newb at Crochet[? spelliing? my comps auto spell ain't working] Anyways. I have this pattern from aintuquelilac.com for a crocet wig cap and I can't make heads or tails. I learn by watching someone else do it.

I know it's for mohair, but it can be used for other wig types. say, yarn wigs.

I looked on Youtube for tuts, but got everything else but what I was looking for. I wanna make a new wig for my boy, or recap his current wig. Can anyone help? I muchly appreciate it. ^_^

What part are you finding confusing? I have written out the instructions the way I would do for myself to make this. I mentally do this when I read through pattern instructions, and usually write it out before I start. I hope that helps. I haven't tried to do this one, although I have planned to. I think I would have to do a couple tests to get the size right.

Round 1: Chain 6, connect into a loop

Round 2: Chain 4 (counts as 1 double crochet, chain 1)
Double Crochet, chain 1 eleven times into the center previous round and connect to the 3rd chain of the chain 4. 12 stitches

Round 3: Chain 4 (counts as 1 double crochet, chain 1)
Double Crochet, chain 1 into the next chain 1 space on the previous round. Double Crochet, chain 1 twice in the next space. Repeat this three more times adding one Double Crochet, Chain 1 instead of the Chain 4. Connect to the 3rd chain of the chain 4 at the beginning of this round. 16 stitches

Round 4: Chain 4 (counts as 1 double crochet, chain 1)
Double Crochet, chain 1 into the next six chain 1 spaces on the previous round. Double Crochet, chain 1 twice in the next space. Repeat this, adding one Double Crochet, Chain 1 instead of the Chain 4. Connect to the 3rd chain of the chain 4 at the beginning of this round. 18 stitches

Round 5: Chain 4 (counts as 1 double crochet, chain 1)
Double Crochet, chain 1 into the next eight chain 1 spaces on the previous round. Double Crochet, chain 1 twice in the next space. Repeat this, adding one Double Crochet, Chain 1 instead of the Chain 4. Connect to the 3rd chain of the chain 4 at the beginning of this round. 20 stitches

Round 6: Chain 4 (counts as 1 double crochet, chain 1)
Double Crochet, chain 1 into the next 19 chain 1 spaces on the previous round. Connect to the 3rd chain of the chain 4 at the beginning of this round. 20 stitches

Round 7: Chain 4 (counts as 1 double crochet, chain 1)
Double Crochet, chain 1 into the next 19 chain 1 spaces on the previous round. Connect to the 3rd chain of the chain 4 at the beginning of this round. 20 stitches

Finish off the ends

The firts part no problem , the chain X stitches, then SC into the FIRST chain stitch, and then the chain 4. But AFTER that I get totally lost. I learn better by watching someone else in hold your hand mode.

yeah, you are. I'm stick with a bunch of wangdoodles that can't crocet, and NO ONE in my Apt. complex knows how to either. So frustrating. I want to pull my hair out.

The double crochet? And I usually do a chain 3 when turning/counts as first DC.

For a double crochet the yarn goes over the hook once before making a stitch. Pull a loop through the stitch, like with a single crochet. There will be 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over like with a single crochet but only pull through 2 loops. This will leave 2 loops on the hook, yarn over and pull through those. One loop will be left and you start again.

Thanks for the tut, even though she doesn't elaborate on how you get it bowl shaped. I also learn by watching. But pictures kind a help. Thanks again ^_^.

Could the shaping be done by working in the back loops?

Instead of making the stitch with the two loops on top of the stitch you only use the one farthest away from you. Adding a decrease to that could make a bowl shape. And it might start with the smallest part in the middle and get bigger.

The bowl shape is simply as a result of the number of stitches in each round. It starts off gradually as you're still increasing the number of stitches per round, but not by enough for the circle to carry on lying completely flat, and becomes much more obvious when you do a couple of the rounds with the same amount of stitches.

I've tried the Antique Lilac one a few times - I might still have a wig or two. I was never completely happy with how it turned out, but that has nothing to do with the pattern and everything to do with the choice of yarn and hair material. You may also need to play around with the number of stitches and rows to get it to fit your doll's head.

Oh - and it makes quite a nice cap for dolls too (but only if you don't attach any hair )
