Blame my school for that. Spaceketeers, Rose, Fancy Lala were early enough to catch. Ronin Warriors was school bus time. ECA made me never to catch the full Saber Rider, Slam Dunk, Dragonball or Rannma season and I always had to hurry home to catch TMNT and Avatar

Interestingly I can't stand Usagi(1st series and episode in Chinese) as a character that I ended up switching to Zeta Project on another channel. I also notice that older animes and cartoons (pre mid 90s) had more adult lead and the later day stuff had more teens or younger. I could be wrong on this front if my local TV tend to focus on kids more.

I love Ghost in the shell and I love Yu YU Hakusho as well

Now I'm so curious to check out the Amnesia series just to try the sub versus the dub you mentioned! I looked it up...apparently it's done by some studio called "Delirium Studios"? I have never, EVER, in all of my years of watching dubbed anime and following the stuff behind the dubs, heard of that company! Now...I hate to generalize here because it really, really depends on the actual VAs they hire, not the size of the company, but smaller companies tend to have less budget, less experienced VAs, and as a result they spit out dubs of terrible quality. :( No wonder it wasn't that good!

;)

Hmmm, that must be a different Amnesia (There are several running around with that name. When our nephew saw our 'Amnesia' games on the shelves, he said 'Is that the horror game?!' shocked that we would play such a thing. I told him, 'No, it's just a Japanese renai game with the same title!'
THen, there's "Amnesia: Dusk Maiden" which also isn't this series!! :laughs:
I wish it had more of a title than just 'Amnesia' because then you come up with all the other ones in search engines!

This one was dubbed by Sentai Filmworks and just came out last week or so (dubbed.)
I knew I'd dislike the dub because the main reason we even watched/played this series is that there are 5 main guy leads. 3 of 5 are our ABSOLUTE favorite seiyuu. (Taniyama Kisho, Hino Satoshi, and Miyata Kouki) so how could we resist, right?

What I wasn't expecting about the dub is that I actually liked the 'Shin' character's voice better in English than in Japanese. (But I don't like Kakihara Tetsuya's voice, and for Shin, he doesn't really fit well. He's okay in the part, but the English guy seemed to nail it perfectly!

However, the little boy character, (voice in Japanese by a female seiyuuu) is just awful in English, and the villain who's got a split personality (good and bad) is really WRONG in English, too! :laughs: It's so not him! They didn't even try to get a guy who sounds similar! Same goes for two of the other guys! They used low voices where it should be a higher pitch and higher when it should be lower?! So weird. It loses their 'character' when you change their voice so badly. (I'm not sure what type of voice he uses in "Free!" but Nitori's voice actor is Miyata Kouki, who plays the psycho villain here. You know his voice---kind of girlish and soft, but could be threatening when going lower and cruel. Well, in English, they just used a same really manly man's voice for his chara, both good and evil!!! 0_o

THis is like your Cowboy Bebop example where you like the English voice actor for one chara and the Japanese voice actor for another.
But I don't love the English 'Shin' enough to ever watch this show in English! :laughs:

Anyway, yes, you should check it out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amnesia_(visual_novel)

It's a suspense anime, not our usual type, but with our 3 fav seiyuu in it, we had to play/watch. It's well drawn as well, so that helps. ^^
I made BJD of our favorites here:
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=9037&hilit=amnesia+bjd

and plan to make 1/6 chara dolls of the entire case when we get a chance.

I pretty much just watch subs for shows I haven't seen the dubbed version of, sometimes the voices just fit the characters better even if I'm missing out on some of what is going on. One Piece is one where I saw the dubbed version when it was on TV but ended up liking the subs better. I also tend to not watch shows unless I've read the manga first and decided to see if there is a show to go with it, I like reading the manga and watching the related anime just to see how they compare.

I generally prefer subs, as some things tend to get lost in translation and I like to hear what the original voices sound like...

That's not to say there aren't good dubs out there (LOVE the dub of Outlaw Star), but I generally prefer to watch anime in Japanese, and foreign films in whatever language they were originally in.

Nella-I'm still just impressed that you two have a hobby together like that, where it's a happy medium sort of thing! :D The fact that your sister speaks Japanese and will explain the cultural stuff to you is definitely a plus. If I had my own personal translator I would probably prefer subs more too!

Iwa_Hoshi-When I was younger they really didn't play much anime on TV. :( I didn't really have an 'after school' schedule with stuff to watch, I mostly consumed cartoons/movies through the video rental place, so I was vastly limited by what they had in stock but I still got to choose what I wanted to try out, which explains the lack of young female leads. I'm not real big on that young, screechy shoujo dynamic (like...a lot of stuff where people just explain it as "moe", yeah, not my thing for the most part). But I've seen enough of it to know that it's a nightmare when they try and recreate it in English, because the VAs sound like they're having a contest to see who can break glass with the pitch of their voice! OUCH!

Yu Yu Hakusho was such an awesome show. :D When Cartoon Network aired it in the states I was so happy because it was part of the early anime explosion, like where Dragon Ball Z did really well and they were starting to pick up on the fact that American teenagers and children also liked anime's particular feel and style, so we got a bunch of different series. A favourite nostalgia one is Blue Submarine No 6. :D

SetsunaKou- Yeah, it may be a different one then I think? I haven't heard of that other company either though! Isn't it strange though how sometimes the English version can just feel more right than the Japanese version with some characters? And then of course you have the opposite where you're just cringing and going "WHY!?!" at the English voices!

I like when they try and match them up and have talented VAs do it, like Tobi and Deidara from Naruto. Both of them have rather...strange voices that don't completely go with their looks (it's on purpose though, not a case of miscasting), Deidara looks almost like a woman but his voice is deep and definitely a man's, and Tobi's voice is...well, you have to hear it because there's really no way to explain it! I was super surprised when the English VAs matched both Japanese VAs almost precisely! Add the fact that the English VAs were every bit as talented and it felt almost like the same VAs were bilingual and doing both versions, it was a really strange, neat little piece of VA work I noticed!

Now I really have to watch Amnesia because...haha, Miyata Kouki definitely doesn't use that kind of voice in Free! He's soft spoken and cute and likes to yell "Senpaiiiiii~!!" because he (has a mancrush on) really admires his senpai Rin. ;)

Oh Setsuna, your customs are so gorgeous as always!! T^T May I ask what bases they're made out of? Are they Volks? I don't think I've seen 1/3 Volks heads without eyeholes? Is that discontinued or something? Argh I can't stop staring! They're all so stunning!!! <33

Qrinta- Haha, One Piece is one of those ones where you need to ask: Which dub did you see? Because 4kids kind of butchered it. :? I haven't seen some of the more memorable characters in the Funimation dub version yet but I do know it's going to be weird listening to them when I'm used to the sub voices. Although I completely reserve judgement until I hear the performance itself and see how they handle some iconic lines. :)

Lamia Of The Dark- When you say "lost in translation", I'm curious, do you mean you speak Japanese? :D Actually I find subs tend to cut out a lot of stuff, especially when they start getting into more philosophical discussions, a lot of times the subbers have a hard time putting it into a context that makes sense in English (I proofread stuff that's been translated from Japanese and make it flow smoothly in English so I know how hard that particular task can be! :? ), so sometimes the dubs actually do a better job because they need to make it sound okay coming out of a person's mouth. XD;

Outlaw Star was an amazing dub I agree! It's even more amazing when you think about when it was made (dubbing seems to evolve really slowly). I agree that there is something very interesting about watching stuff in the native language though. :D Live action films bother the heck out of me when they're dubbed! :? Something about them feels...really artificial in a way that animated dubs just don't. I watch a lot of movies in French because my favourite director happens to be French, and I couldn't imagine his stuff dubbed! Eeek!

I have learned quite a bit of Japanese, but it's all self-taught from dictionaries/phrasebooks, the internet, and just listening to anime dialogue.

So, while I am not really fluent and don't know all the grammar rules, yeah I can recognize a LOT of common words/phrases... enough to make me look at the subtitles and go "but the words they said mean [something different from what the subtitle says]".

Also, honorifics are much more complex in Japanese than they are in English, and knowing which term someone is using when saying someone else's name shows more about their relationship with each other than just hearing them call each other by their names in the English dub... (like, the difference between referring to someone with "-san" or "-kun")

Outlaw Star is one of the few anime I know of in which the dub had MORE CURSING than the original Japanese.

Genuinely impressed over here by all the people who have some level of knowledge of Japanese beyond just a couple of phrases (which is ... my level of knowledge, and the phrases probably aren't all that polite because my most watched jdrama is Gokusen and.... well angry teenage boys *le shrug*)

Overall, the impression from the thread so far seems to be that either can suffice as long as it's done well? Tell me if I'm grossly oversimplifying or missing the point completely. Nella mentioned being impressed by the Funimation dubs and, personally, I can really see her point. A lot of the time now, when I hear a media is up for being dubbed, I hope it's Funimation who get it. I also hope that it'll be put online in a way that can be viewed from the UK, or that we'll actually get a dvd release this time round. Being an anime fan over here can be ... awkward if you're not willing to import / don't have some of the freeware media players that are programmed to work at an all regions level.

I get completely distracted if the audio and video tracks on non-animated stuff are out of sync, so dubbed films are a nightmare for me. (Mind you, and I say this as someone who watches very little TV (it's on when we eat, and unless it's something utterly engrossing, that's about it) I'm noticing more and more on TV too)

i love both subs and dubs, but as mentioned before i really prefer a good dub over a good sub. Lucky Star is a classic for me, i've always really appreciated the way that was dubbed (especially Konata's voice. it was completely natural!). my favorite dub of all time will always be the Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt dub, actually. i have the box set DVD and i can't stand hearing the original Japanese voices! Stocking sounds like a little girl, and Panty's voice is just plain annoying in one of the worst kinds of ways. the English dub voices fit them flawlessly and naturally!
i do appreciate subs a lot in an educational sort of way, however. watching subbed anime/jdrama is how i know any of the language at all, certain phrases, and a lot of uses of certain language tricks in the culture. subs, for me, seem to be more linguistically and culturally in-touch with Japanese than dubs. although this wasn't too common when i first got into anime, subs nowadays put in a lot of references to the original Japanese implications, words, and phrases. for instance, a character saying "yare yare" in a dub might just say something like "good grief" or "geez Louise", when really it's not directly either of those (myself, i find the best way to translate yare yare is to translate it as "oy vey" c; can't go wrong with Yiddish!). in a sub, a translator may leave a note explaining the exclamation or simply leave the subtitle out entirely.
also, i have a huge soft spot for translator's notes. i love seeing them, they're so informative!

of course, to each his own! i know a lot of people who can't STAND dubs and a lot of people (usually older) who REFUSE subs. my mother can't watch any show or movie with subtitles because she can't read them without putting her face very close to the screen. not like she likes anime anyway, of course XD

I watch some shows in subs and prefer they stay subbed (Black Jack, Junjou Romantica, Sekaiichi Hatsukoi, Yu-Gi-Oh season 0) but a lot of the time I prefer watching in dub if there is a dub availible. I will happily watch the rest of a show in sub if it means I can finish the story where the dub left off, but in the case of shows like Attack on Titan I prefer the dub over the sub, if only because I can appreciate the gorgeous art style.

Also I really do prefer things like Hayao Miyazaki films to be dubbed so I can again appreciate the art style and story without struggling.
