Ok it wasn't a failure - but he didn't come out the colour I'd expected from the dye packet! He's a cold greeny bluey colour rather than the almost muddy green I'd hoped for...

Current colour next to a doll in the colour he started out in... He's been sealed with Tamiya TS80 to stop any rubbing but I think the plastic has actually gone greeny/blue since I scrubbed his face with hot soapy water and then isopropanol pretty hard to remove the excess pigment that had stuck to it (weirdly this pigment was a browny-red colour - what the heck?!)
Image

Close-up so you can see the uneveness of how the dye took - I think if I'd scrubbed him off more thoroughly the colour would have come out more uniform, but I quite liked this look for the character (think a dirt-covered Labyrinth style goblin)

Rawr!!!

In all I think the acetone idea probably does work - but as MeltedCaramel says I reckon I needed an awful lot more RIT dye in there!

@Vetinari: OK -Hujoo head/Obitsu body worked fine, so I can send you the body/ies for more practice if you want, for cost of postage. There's two of that size (no heads, obv ;-) ). From reading experiments on dyeing 3D printed dolls it can be useful to dye just bits so you can try different concentrations and times without needing shed loads of bodies!

Ooh! Thanks so much! That's going to be very very useful having more ...sacrificeable parts around.

I'll be able to play with acetone concentrations, and I'm going to have another shot at this using Dylon instead. It's easier to get hold of and possibly a stronger dyeing agent generally from what I've seen, and unlike RIT the Dylon "general purpose" dye is actually a single black pigment rather than several darkish shades mixed together which sounds promising.

(Seriously I generally use Dylon for clothes that I've ruined but not worn-out, and have never had a pigment separate out into consituent colours - and yet the RIT appears to have separated into several shades of green blue and brown - not impressed at all with the way this stuff behaves)

Thanks, that's all from one skein of Red Heart Magical. It's too thick for tiny doll clothes but its still fun.

Switched to the grey yarn, no matter the color most of it is the red-purple-grey-brown fluff.
