And again, to reiterate, I don't live under a rock or in a bubble and I'm not going to feed anything to my child that might endanger his health.

Geez folks, it was an off-hand humorous comment.

It irritates the everlovin' piss outta me that people assume sushi means raw. Absolutely drives me nuts. I get glares when I order sushi now. Given that my orb-belly makes it obvious I'm pregnant, people act like it's a license to meddle and make judgmental assumptions. I just want to look at them and say, "it's cooked rice and veggies, mind your own bleepin' business." I don't. I try to be polite. People mean well I think, they're just not trained to think objectively anymore. It is no longer the American way, nowadays our precious feelings are paramount! Folks fly off the handle and state reactionary opinion without first understanding what the other person is on about. I think people are too busy with their emotions to think rationally before responding. I think my response here is bordering on the bitchy, but I'm not sure I care enough to edit myself.

I'd actually like to see real research on all this mercury business. The way I hear it, and this is unfounded hearsay, but the Japanese have way-high mercury counts in their bodies and suffer no ill effects, nor do their children. Ah well, who really knows? I plan on following the food guides suggested by my chosen medical professionals. And then I plan on researching those food guides for myself because I don't trust the majority of medical professionals.

Well, I wasn't being reactionary, I was just repeating what I found out when my daughter was about 2 years old because her dad liked sushi. And, its true, I do think of sushi as raw, though it's because I'm the lone non-seafood eater in the family and raw is all my husband and daughter ever eat when ordering sushi. I forget there's anything else...

Sorry I brought it up.

As long as the Tilapia is farmed more responsibly than Salmon in British Columbia. The farms in the waters where the killer whales are have brought Atlantic salmon which have spread disease to the native fish and caused other problems.

One fish warning I have seen that makes sense is the higher up on the food chain the more chances for any kind of pollution and moderation is the best path. As for fish eating sewage all sorts of sea critters eat "marine snow" but I can agree that farmed fish for human consumption shouldn't be exposed to the bacteria and stuff we send out.

eat sardines. they are small, so they reproduce fast, and low enough on the foodchain they have low levels of mercury. plus they are pretty good with avacado.

yeah, things with eyes attached are on my do not want list.
not because they're lookin at me or nothing.
but because, eyes are gelatinous goo. once you've seen inside one, *shudder*.

and yeah, sushi =/= raw fish. my mum eats it only if it's cooked shrimp or etc inside the rolls. i can get kids not eating it, to prevent allergies. like how you don't let them eat peanuts, or shellfish, or etc till they're older.

Never heard of Tilapia - wikied it, sounds a bit like Pangasius in terms of controversy/cheapness.

(Also really raw stuff/shellfish is considered bad for kids? Huh... Not sure what to make of that - is it actually true, or just overprotectiveness? I remember eating raw fish, raw egg, shellfish, unpasteurised cheese whatever when I was a sprog - though that may have been because my family are heavily involved in the food industry, at several levels, so we always had something coming in that was unusual)
