Doll room, Japanese style...

This is what I've been working on while I wait for my doll to arrive. (I thought she would be here by now! arg! ahem...) I started out with the tatami floor, which is mostly cardboard and cheap grass beach mats. Took me 2 tries to get the scale right, because I'm a dummy and took the scaled measurement of the short side and used it for the long side. Anyone want some 1/6 scale tatami mats? If you want to make your own for some reason, I did blog my method, link is in my sig.

The floor lamp is a table lamp from Ikea and the flower pot is a little mini one from WalMart. The futon I sewed myself, which I sort of blogged about too but mostly to link to someone else's tutorial on making baby futons.

The whole thing is inside a little "studio" I made with white hardboard and tissue paper... I've already realized it's too small, but considering the most expensive part of it was the $9.99 clamp desk lamps and their $7.99 daylight bulbs, and I can reuse those, I'll probably just build another one after I move.

I need my doll to show up so I can actually make clothes!

My cat decided before I even had the top futon sewed that the bed was really for him...

Looking good. And I have a cat that could be your's twin... Aiko would do the same thing if I had my dolls' futon on the floor. ^_~

Lovely. It looks very cosy since its cat approved. like the lantern. Would you be doing the paper wall/window/doors as well?

I bought tatami mat coasters from Daiso a long time back, but gave up the Japanese room concept when my 1/6ers grew in numbers.

Would you be doing the paper wall/window/doors as well?

The walls currently are just the walls of my little studio thing... I'm thinking when I rebuild it I'll make the "side walls" kind of like shoji, with wooden frames and tissue paper backing (either permanent side walls or some kind of detachable shoji thing). That way they will look nicer and part of the "room" but still be able to diffuse the light through them. I'll have to figure out some woodworking tricks in order to be able to do that and have it look decent heheh. As for the back wall, I'm not really sure what to do with it, I might just use foam board or something to make different back wall inserts for different scenes...

Best advice with the wood working is be very patient, and build a jig to help hold the parts in place. Your doll room looks great by the way.

It's not so much the width that you can see in the photo, it's more the angles that I'm hiding with the camera that are too short. The back wall is only *just* 60cm tall, so if a SD size doll stands up their wig would probably be over the top... Also the side walls are really short, so I can't really take a shot any farther away without the edge of the wall being visible.
