Soooooo jealous of being able to do that! My job is a 40 minute drive from my home. I'd hate to guess how long it would take to bike!

Spelling mistakes are a given for everyone. Just don't make mistakes while handling food, children, pets, weapons, or explosives.

Europe and the UK are fantastic for bike riders.

US....not so much.

Where I live, I am 10 miles to the nearest town. Summer has started and it is (I am going to use Celsius degrees for Evelien's sake here) 26.5 degrees in the day. By the time you get home from shopping by bike, milk would be sour, butter would be soft and ice cream would be melted. By the end of next month it will be 37.7 degrees in the day. At some point we will have weeks long where it never gets below 43.3 degrees in the day. This will not stop until close to the end of October, when it will begin to rain. We can get as much as 5 cm of rain in an hour. Then will come winter. This winter was grand, we got almost no snow. Last winter we got a meter of snow. This year instead of snow we got ice storms, again we were lucky we kept power, but one year we got an ice storm that put a 3 cm of ice on the road that lasted two weeks. Have you ever ridden a bike on ice?

And I live in a state where the winter is generally very mild. Where I grew up, farther north, there was about 1/3 of a meter of snow on the ground all winter long and outside of the main roads the streets were icy all winter long.

Also, car drivers are very careless around bike riders. They pay no attention to them and many people are hurt every year because they were riding bikes and a car driver "didn't see them."

This is why in the US we "can't go everywhere on a bike."
All you damn kids get offa my lawn!

I was watching some TV show and the hosts went to a shop that made wooden shoes. They got their pair personalized and everything. Turns out they were in Holland, Michigan! The town has windmill (that makes flour!) and a tulip festival every year. The best part is my mom totally wants to go to the festival next year and we can take Amtrek from Chicago!

I was lucky to grow up in a very large neighborhood where there were a lot of kids, so I used to bike a lot all around the place. There was a park nearby and everything so we could go to the park. And roller skating! I used to roller skate a lot, too. That was a bit more dangerous since if I hit a hill it was a LOT harder to slow down than it would've been on a bike. lol

I do remember, though, once I was cruising down a hill on my bike and the chain broke. I couldn't brake! There was a parked car coming up real fast, but some jerk was driving RIGHT beside me so I couldn't pull out further into the road to avoid it. I had to leap off the bike going about 30 MPH to avoid running headlong into the parked car. Took a tumble on asphalt and got a number of cuts and scrapes, but I was REALLY lucky I didn't break a bone or something, or that the chain got tangled up in the tire or anything.

And that asshole in the car just kept right on driving. After that, I didn't ride my bike around so much.

I haven't been on a bike OR roller skates in years. I'd probably fall on my ass if I tried now. ^_^; Never did like running, but I love to take long walks on gorgeous days that aren't too hot, like four or five miles. Just plug in my iPod and go. I still live in a smaller neighborhood with a park, but I don't see nearly so many kids riding bikes as I used to. Of course, this neighborhood is a lot closer to ghetto central than the old one. Any kid with a bike risks having it stolen unless they've got a proper garage or shed to lock it in.
