Hmmmm....I'm thinking of writing a dollieh background for Elsie. I've got the idea that she's hard of hearing/mostly deaf...BUT she can hear via bone conduction. Her deafness has resulted of an injury, fell off her horse, head injury. I KNOW there are different types of deafness, where some can hear via bone conduction and for others, nothing helps.

I've started a bit of research but I feel somewhat overwhelmed. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Sounds interesting, absynthe - wish I could help! My cousin's deaf, due to illness, but I don't know that much about it.

I don't know what I did to my legs over vacation. No, scratch that - I did nothing except crew for my local production of 9 to 5 over vacation - and now that I'm back at work on my feet all day for the past two days my knees are very angry with me. And they stole "my" desk (admittedly, an extra desk and chair that they left in the room I'm in most often) so I don't sit at all except lunch. My knee is very, very unhappy with me lol.

For the deaf thing stuff some cotton balls in your ears and watch TV, listen to music without headphones, listen to the world and try to notice what you don't hear. Speech would be muffled and you'd try to guess what some words are and get them and the context of the conversation wrong. Another thing is not able to hear sounds that are in certain ranges, high or low. SOme ear damage can affect balance too.

With a brain injury the ears could be fine but the signals can get scrambled in reception and understanding. There could be damage in the hearing saddle or somewhere else.

Thanks for the advice. I will try that. I did find a brief explanation through that link. I just needed to refine my search on the definition of types of hearing loss/deafness. After all the ear infections and sinus issues, I understand the issue of speech and sounds being garbled and faint. I really did not explain myself. Sorry about that Dollykim. My grandfather was deaf after years of perfect hearing. My mom and her mom both wear hearing aides. It's fun with the three of us in a room trying to talk. I was looking more for a scientific/medical view. Now I know where/how to further research the issue.

Sympathy here, the issue is complicated; my partial deafness stems from a combination of childhood illnesses/industrial noise... (It's an utter pain in conversations with more than 1 person present...) And yet is completely different to my father's which is purely from a physical injury...

Edit: More info - in his case he has permanent tinnitis(Sp?)/ringing noises, and in my case my hearing has degraded in a certain range of frequencies - which just happen to correspond to the average vocal range of the adult male voice.

I have tinnitus and vertigo due to chronic ear/sinus infections, which is why I prefer vinyl music to digital. The sound is so different with digital. I miss a lot, which was why I was so shocked I could hear the violins in the Strauss waltzes I have on LP . I still use an old analogue headset at the office for phones. I have a digital headset which is worthless to me. I spell a lot phonetically, like names and account numbers. And the head injury years ago, although I wonder about the speech therapy I had as a kid (k-4).

My grandfather was funny. The kids (myself, my brother and cousins) would visit and he would take out his hearing aides. Grandma would flip and worry. He would still talk to us, though, in German. We never could understand him and he would laugh at us. :/

Even losing a small amount of hearing is a nightmare. That is part of the reason why I hate going out in public. Everything is garbled.

So! I have a bunch of dollieh stuff up for sale on the MP. I mark them down after a few weeks. I put Mirrim's Iplehouse Vito on layway with her and decide to have a 10% off sale ... Then yesterday I get a PM from a DOA member asking me to not only reduce the cost of a pair of eyes even more, but to include shipping in that price and oh, btw, she doesn't want to pay any Paypal fees.

I reread my response to her and I think I could be sainted just for my reply. It certainly wasn't what I wanted to say ....

It's kind of silly how sad I get whenever a doll gets sold as soon as I finish working on it for someone. This is now the third time that has happened that I know of. I recently painted an Iplehouse Shane for someone on DoA and now they're selling him. They did like the face up, but they couldn't get attached to the doll. Still makes me sad.

@Kirahfaye I've all but laughed at some buyers like that, or the people who want to trade but have no idea what the value of something is. Then there's times when I'll post a pic of an outfit for a pattern book, like at Deviant Art, and people get pissy I don't give them the pattern instead of the link to the book. Want me to make it for you and send you the doll as well?

*Milkshake won't eat the canned dog food, but one of the cats will, she only wants to be hand fed eggs. She has her 'grr' back and if it wasn't for the cone she'd be jumping and climbing and playing mountain goat.

Basically she's herself again.
