Belle from Disney's Beauty and the Beast, is spelled "Belle"; it's her name, what's on all of her official merchandise and how it has been officially spelled for twenty or so years, while "Bell" is not. "Belle" and "Beauty" are one and the same, yes, because one is just the English translation and one is the French translation. To me, it's not semantics - it's about talking about an established character who has an established spelling of her name.
Coming from that view, then I get the picking. I tend to take a lot of things at face value and for me, however someone spells Belle is not the fight of words that I have. I go both ways with the name. I don't really see the deeper meaning, just the name. I hope I'm explaining that alright.
Edit: I've come to realize my lax on spelling her name stems from my own issues with people spelling my name wrong. It got to the point where I just responded to whatever name they decided I had that day. I totally understand why anyone would get picky with Bell vs Belle, it's just not the battle I choose to have personally. I flip between the spellings unconsciously and it's not one of those things that bother me. Now, arguing that Belle taught girls to love their abuser... That I will fight you on (but I don't actually wanna fight about it, I'd rather friendly conversations than arguments.)
