Your characters as dolls

Postby animeangel09189 » Tue Dec 27, 2011 10:01 pm

What? Two post by me? is this allowed? honestly Idc lol So I've been asking around I've also been know to ask questions repeatedly so if I already asked this here I'm sorry I'll delete it but question the character I make my doll in to am I allowed to use that character for other stuff? like if I wanted to put tabatha (the character I'm making my BJD into) into a comic and sell it is that fine?

Because I'm thinking of making Tabatha/jackson's story into a comic since I miss comic making and I want to know that if I wanted to I'd have the option of selling said comic if I wanted >3<

That's perfectly, fine. Look at Kiki-chan's website Acrylic-eyes her dolls are her muses for it.

Are you talking drawing the characters or using photographs? There might be an issue with selling the latter (or maybe not; I wouldn't be the person to know) but if you're doing artwork, I don't see where it would be an issue since you created the characters yourself.

Full time professional writer here, married to a full time professional artist who has done comics work.

Short form: if it is your original character you are allowed to do anything you want with it. Doll, comic, book, movie, whatever.

Longer form: if you were going to take photographs of the doll to use as images for, say, a comic, you would probably be wise to get permission from the company that made the doll first. Most of them will be happy to give you permission. Volks tends to be the exception. Some may ask you to send them the pictures to be used by them for advertising at no expense to them if the pictures are good enough.

Other than that, if the character is yours and original you can put it in whatever form you want.

^ Agreed. If it's photos contact the company that made the doll and start with a simple E-Mail telling them what doll you have, any major modifications you might have made, and asking if you can publish pictures. They may tell you there are certain things the doll can't do, like break the law and take drugs, and they may give you certain things to say about copywrite etc.

Of all the companies I have dealt with only 2 had rules, one about not seen breaking laws the other about stating the doll was modified, and only Volks said they'd get back to me and never quite did. No one has said 'no' and many were more than happy for the doll promotion.
