Falling out of love with dolls...

Postby Evelien » Mon Dec 12, 2011 4:33 pm

... has it happened to you?

I've caughtt resin fever. Big time. I'm thinking of selling lots of other dolls from my collection just so I'll have more money to buy resin dolls. I'm feeling sooo much doubt though. Even though I'm not giving some dolls the attention they deserve and it should be easy to sell them in order to get something I want more, they seem to have a personality and they have a history with me, which makes it hard. Ugh. I'm a bit torn. I guess people put their dolls on sale with a "feeler" tag for a reason. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's unsure what to do in such a case...

Yep and kind of frequently. I've purchased loads of dolls during my time in this hobby and turned around and sold them months later. It takes time to figure out what you're really looking for. Besides, you can always recreate the character if you decide later on that you miss them. :)

As much as people say, "oh my god your selling x!" They are your dolls and there for you get the final say. Not to say that I don't secretly hope you'll keep Sosha at the same time.. and yet I just fell back in love with a doll when I changed her eyes, wig, and body. But I've still sold my fair share of them as well, because when you don't bond... you just know it.
A hobby isn't supposed to leave you wistful, regretful and vaguely disappointed. BJD collecting is as customizable as the dolls themselves. Do whatever pleases you the most, because otherwise, why do it at all? All for the 'Gram Bitches love the 'Gram.

Lol, and yet you were the first to say "Oh my God you're selling X!!", haha.

I'm not saying I never bonded with some of my dolls... even if you do bond, the love can fade.. :-\

Sixoclock, you're SO right. I never even thought about that. That makes it a hell of a lot easier tbh...

I guess I'm on the opposite end when I say don't do something you'l find yourself regretting later. I've only rarely sold dolls - and those tend to be ones that I simply impulse bought and didn't really "love" the sculpt of. I have dozens of dolls that are in various stages of unfinished - but I plan on finishing each one and wouldn't sell any of them because i know I'd regret it. Sure, I sold off my Disney doll collection, but it took me years before I did it and they were really nothing more than "dust collectors". so unlike these dolls LOL

From someone who has dolls older than her little sister...

They will know when they are ready to part with you. Early in my custom doll career I sent off a few 'old friends' who were ready to go to their next adventure. We had finished our time together. It was about feeling done with each other. Yes I remember them and always will. When it comes down to it they're just dolls.

As for the "bonding" thing I can't let that weigh to heavily on me. If we have to evacuate there are those who come first and those who may have to be left behind. Not bonding is no reason for me to just sell off a doll, I have no idea what I'll ever do with Taffy but he's here forever, I want to give them time because I bothered to pick them out.

Now I am getting ready to cull the hoard a bit but that's because I just don't want and can't use the doll. It's a conscious effort to examine each doll, and other things, and determine if it serves a purpose in my life. In general do you trade one possession for another or do you like to keep things for a long time? Selling a loved thing for something hot and trendy is never the answer and if you really want a resin doll you will find a way to save/earn for it.

Well...
I've never had a doll around me all the time before, like Ellie now. I thought I loved my other dolls... but it's never been like this before. Perhaps the others were impulse buys, I don't know, they didn't feel like that at the time.

Ellie.. I can't stop touching her and looking at her. I can't help it :(

I do tend to hold on to things rather than chuck them away easily, actually. I'm a bit of a pack rat. So when I want to sell dolls, I guess it's serious...

And just for the record, I have over a 100 vintage dolls from my childhood + recollected at flea markets that I'll NEVER EVER sell ;)

I would say it's part of the hobby. Some of my dolls never get attn so I don't feel bad about sending them off to loving homes. I'm also a bit of a pack rat like you but I don't have much room so that's part of it too. (Also 100 dolls is quite a lot! I have about 60 dolls right now but most of them are the 1/6 variety or just heads.)

I have sold dolls I really loved and I still think about them a lot. However, several of the ones I loved were created to be sold so even though I felt really bad about it (Aili...augh I still miss her.) I send them off anyway because if I keep every doll I work on I won't have any room for new ones and I also won't have the small income addition that I need to pay off my bills between freelance gigs.

I think if you are still doing a lot with the doll you probably wouldn't sell her. Personally I love resin dolls but I like working on both 1/6 heads and BJD heads so while my own personal collection is mostly comprised of resins except for a few special obitsus, I have a lot of blank 1/6 heads floating around (including commissions.)

Like you tho, I wouldn't sell any childhood dolls. I also have some dolls i"m really on the fence about so I might sell them if I really have to.

Then keep Ellie and kill Wesley... And I might have you beat on dolls. I haven't loved a doll like I love Xavier so I know how that feels too.

I'm taking decisive steps in depackrating, there's at least 3 generations before me, because I don't want to end up like that. Aside form dolls I've accumulated a lot of books. Then the tablet was invented and it met the scanner and it was good. Books started to go away so other people could read them and it got better. I only have so much space to keep stuff away from the pets so if another doll wants to come in something else has to go out.

This sounds like a worry doll problem, tell your dolls your thoughts before you go to bed and see what the morning tells you.
