Packaging - to keep or throw

Postby djhirokun » Sat Oct 22, 2011 8:22 pm

I am pretty sure this has been asked before, but what do you all do with the packaging/boxing of your dollies? I have some dolls in their original boxes loose because I like the box and don't want to junk it. All my dolls are mass produced dolls, not limited. I used to save all my Bratz boxes then started to run out of closet space. I just cut the back off with the illustration. This helped clear up not only space but more room for dolls.

:laughs: Oh my! We could NEVER throw away their boxes! We actually buy dolls FOR their boxes! (Then we resell or throw away the dolls!) All the time! ^^

For our commission work, we're ALWAYS in need of 'doll boxes' which we customize to fit the doll we're making. So they are super precious items to us! We're always in the clearance section of toy stores looking for nice boxes! (And it's a plus, if the doll inside comes with good footwear or earrings! Those are always valuable!)

For my own dolls, I never de-box, but my sister does. She's a firm believer in 'toys feel unloved if you don't take them out of their box!' :laughs: So, her boxes either become customized ones for commissions or I make her save them in a big box in her closet or under her bed.

Mostly though, I'm unsuccessful as she doesn't like empty boxes hanging around!

So more for the commission boxes!

I just did a big cleaning and rework of my front bedroom/man cave and discovered A LOT of empty boxes. I thought I'd done such a good job of purging them but I guess not. As a general rule, I only save things that I feel are interesting or significant packages but I really do try to throw most boxes away.

Tried to keep boxes for storing cards, sewing equipment and stuff, but whenever I had to do spring cleaning the unused boxes are the first to go.

Boxes get thrown out if I don't plan to pack the kids back up.

>_> although I do save packages with pictures of anime characters on them :D
I have so many dolls that I can't fit all their names in my signature anymore. @__@

fashion type doll boxes go bye-bye asap - they take up too much space and since unboxing a fashion doll drives me insane (all those damn twist ties, plastic bands and string ARRRGGGG) they generally are not in keepable condition when I'm done LOL.

For resin dolls it depends on the box. The average bland cardboard ones go out unless I'm using them to store manga in. Nicer ones that are harder board and fancier get kept and dolls that are in the "customize queue" are stored in them until I have time to work on them.

I don't bother keeping the mass-produced doll boxes like Barbie. Then again, I don't actually collect the Barbie or Liv or Monster High or what have you.

I used to keep the BJD doll boxes but I started running out of room. Now I just pull the pillows out of 'em and trash 'em all, unless they're really nice or belong to a limited doll. The fairyland boxes, for example, are good, heavy boxes with foam inserts that the dolls fit snugly into, so I usually keep those. I have a few others stashed under the bed or on a shelf, but the rest are pretty much gone by now.

Since all my dolls, but one, are resin and are still at a manageable number (hides from GH and Momieh) I still keep the boxes they come in. None of them are special, but they are all either nicely or really well made. I still have the box my PlanetDoll mini came in, also - its a nice clear plastic (the person I sold her to didn't want it).

I've seen members post up empty boxes for sale on the MP sometimes. Usually it's not for much, but I imagine that if you have a secondhand doll that didn't come in it's original box, buy one might be of interest sometimes.

I'm currently using my nice boxes from resin dolls as risers for displaying my fashion dolls.

I kept my big Obitsus' boxes to turn them into sofas and stuff lol, but so far I didn't do anything with them and they're just standing in my way in my hobby room :P. I do intentionally keep all Pamela Love boxes because they're vintage and rare and bring back loads of memories :)
