Going through dolls?

Postby AlmySidaKay » Tue Aug 02, 2011 3:15 pm

I'm in love with Evie and Sparrow, but since Wren has been home I don't feel like she fits, I've been tempted to sell her to get her in a NS instead, or even just not have her and get another Isabella or something. Worst part is I just look at her and think... some how she doesn't fit like I had envisioned, but then I find myself asking questions like, is it her sculpt or is it a resin color thing? I know for me I'm rather upset that WS is impossible to photograph compared to NS. But I take Evie everywhere with me and the other 2 just get left in the dust, so, maybe it's become a size thing for me again? Or maybe it's that I have problems with too many dolls? I'm also just a bit worried people will think I'm kind of burning through dolls. Does this happen to others? What is your opinion of people who don't keep multiple dolls for very long? Is it wasteful? Or are they just still on that quest for the doll that fits best? And any opinions on what you would do in this sort of situation?

Sorry a lot on my mind lately which is why I haven't been talking as much. I hope others have lots of thoughts or answers to my questions. <3
A hobby isn't supposed to leave you wistful, regretful and vaguely disappointed. BJD collecting is as customizable as the dolls themselves. Do whatever pleases you the most, because otherwise, why do it at all? All for the 'Gram Bitches love the 'Gram.

Out of the first three dolls that came to my house, only one stayed. At one point, I had 5 MSDs. Now I have two and modded a third to be shorter. It takes a while to discover what brings you joy.Right now, my dolls are in two groups MSDs and mature tinies identified by their relationship to Shriara and the super tines-12cm and below based on their relationship to Cordie.

I don't have much room to speak on the subject I guess, since I've only got 2 dolls so far but just in case my 2 cents is valued I'll take a whack at it.

When I bought Bryn for the longest time I would just sit there and stare at her, it was really the same questions going through my mind as well, I went as far as posting a thread to sell her. But one day, not too long ago she came back to me and I fell in love with her again, by that point I'd already thought of her character, her likes, dislikes, pet peeves etc. I knew who she was so she took her place in the world, finally. If you're having an issue with her skin color I suggest using no flash, very little lamp light and LOTS of natural light. If you can reduce the light a bit on your camera that'll help even more. White skin is hard to capture but once you figure out how to do it, you can photograph it beautifully.

If its a sculpt thing, its a sculpt thing. But it might be worth while changing her faceup, adding blushing in certain places to change the way her face will look. But if you don't like her as much as you thought you would there isn't anything you can do about it and at that point, you're making the right choice by considering giving her to someone who will play with her. It'd be more of a waste to have this pretty little girl in her bag for years because she didn't take to you like you'd hoped. That's not anyones fault, its like ice cream, it sounds really good and you're convinced it'll be good but once you take half the carton and put it into a bowl, its not that great.

You don't eat ice cream you don't like right? You offer it to someone else. So why not give Wren to someone who you know will take good care of her.

My opinion on people getting rid of dolls quickly isn't that its a bad thing, in fact it warms my heart to know that people are willing to say they made the wrong decision and pass her on to someplace better. I'd be doing exactly what you're doing now, I'd suggest first though really playing with her character and looks before you call it the end. You might be suprised the difference between what Wren wants to be and what you'd like her to be.

/end philosophical rant about ice cream and dolls.

I know several other people that do this so you are not alone in this situation. I know it can be frustrating but it is your process of how you chose which doll works for you. It's one thing to see a photo of a doll or even get to see a doll in person that is own by someone else or at a store and it is totally different once you have the doll for a while. Sometimes you bond with it and sometimes not.

I have 1 MiniFee, 3 YoSDs and 2 tinies. For me I think that will be it for a while.

You mentioned wondering if you have to many dolls. I sometimes feel like that and to be honest with myself I do. Not BJDs but fashion dolls. I am in the process of trying to downsize majorly. So I can relate to that feeling.

It's not just you... I've 'burned through' my Moxie teenz girls before I even finished my customization project on them, with the shrinking heads and all, shrunken Melrose still needs her eyelashes properly applied... She doesn't have a wig other than a red fur spare one and she looks like a clown :P

I find it hard to divide my attention because I bought lots and lots of dolls pretty much all at once... I'm gonna try and settle down with what I have now, before I make any decisions.

I've bought and sold many dolls since starting this hobby. Sometimes I regret selling one (such as my Kid Delf Ani elf twins whose sculpt ended up being discontinued not long after), but most times I just think that I can always re-buy that doll in the future if I really find myself missing him or her. I see nothing wrong with it. These dolls become what we want them to be, with the characters and the personalities and all that, but in the end they're still inanimate objects. Sometimes EXPENSIVE inanimate objects. And if you're not completely satisfied with the doll you've invested time and money in, then I see no reason not to sell it and buy another sculpt that will give you more satisfaction.

I dunno - I have 50+ of the buggers at this point (and that's not counting 1/6 fashion dolls like Momoko and Jenny - that's JUST bjds!) so I'm not one to really talk, but yea, even I've had the occassional doll that I impulse bought and just didn't like as much once I had it in my hands. Mind you since I'm lazy about selling things sometimes they will sit around for a while and then one day I'll know EXACTLY what that doll was supposed to be and I'm glad i have it. Right now I'd say I can think of about 5 dolls, off the top of my head, that may potentially get sold, but I'm not in a rush to do it.

Before you sell Wren due to color, what you might want to do is deliberately "yellow" her. White dolls do not ever stay white - inevitably they yellow into a really nice cream sort of color. You can speed this process up by letting the doll have a nude sunbath for a while. Ask Cirquemom - she did that with one of her Sprites.

Maybe you could put her away out of sight for a time being and set a date for when you'll take her back out. If you still feel the same when you see her again, it's probably best to let her go. I tend to take the cautious route as I have had too many times where I've given something up only to want it back again.

You could also try the standard change of eyes/wig/clothes to see if you can breath more life into her.

After a cull of a bunch of non customs at the beginning of this phase everyone who's come here is pretty much here forever, unless I needed them just to mug their stuff, but them I can count on one hand. Only two dolls have played musical bodies, Svetlana and Spider-Man, she because I found a second doll with a better resemblance and he because I broke my first one. Old Svetlana is a work doll, old Spidey is Peter and new Spidey is Tobey.

There's two main categories- my babies who are the customs I've painted, sculpted, "made" in one way or another. Then there's the "work" dolls here for my website. Work dolls can join the ranks of babies and some babies find the dollhouse too crowded and live in one of the doll holders for awhile. That doesn't mean I'm done with them, they just need to rest. I could cut down on work dolls if I had to but I don't.

Only recently have I put thought in to making reroots and repaints to sell but that's because I'm not sure I want a zillon Monsters running around when I only want their stuff. Unless I think of a new Monster for them to be.

I find some dolls take longer than others. Sometimes changing wigs, eyes, or outfits can make a big difference. You find that defining item and suddenly everything fall into place.
