And this is why I sprung for Carbonite. It's a program that backs up EVERYTHING on your computer. If your comp ever dies or you need a new one you can just call them up and they will put everything that was backed up on your new comp. I did this after a huge virus attack and I lost all my pics, including picture of my recently deceased father. I cried for days.

i consider myself more computer savvy than most. The thing that was hurt most in this incident was my pride because i've NEVER had to do this before my first comp died of old age. I've never been defeated by a virus before now. At least i saved all my truely important things and only lost that anime :)

I have decided that NO ONE touches my computer but me and my son. I have had so many people who were visiting and decided they could "improve" it, only to mess it up. And did they even ask? Of course not.
I also never "lend" books or tapes anymore, because as soon as someone gets their greedy little hands on them, they decide they've been given a gift. I lost a dozen movies to a so-called friend that way, and a number of art books. And the movie-borrowing friend wants to borrow more. Right.

A hobby isn't supposed to leave you wistful, regretful and vaguely disappointed. BJD collecting is as customizable as the dolls themselves. Do whatever pleases you the most, because otherwise, why do it at all? All for the 'Gram Bitches love the 'Gram.

I never ever lend anything I expect to get back, books, movies, music, anything I only have one copy of never go anywhere. Most people have no concept of respecting other people's property which is sad. It says a lot for a society when Japan doesn't have problems with looting after the tsunami yet people evacuate here because of a fire and robbers come in right after them taking everything they can get their hands on down to the copper pipes in the wall.

Urk, sorry to hear about the OP's computer's virus! I hope everything's been resolved. I swear by my virus checker and keep back-ups on a drive. And I never let non-family borrow my computer or "improve" it (last time a "friend" borrowed my computer, they put troll comments on youtube in my name! I had to make so many apologies... needless to say, we aren't friends anymore!)

Also...

In all fairness, it's not a societal difference, it's a media-reporting difference. For example, during Hurricane Katrina, media reports accused African Americans of "looting" while depicting Caucasians who did the same thing as people who "found" food to stay alive.

For various reasons, looting is common after natural (and unnatural) disasters--- but media coverage discriminates. Japanese looting didn't receive much press coverage was because of America's cozy business ties to Japan (looting stories are bad for business) and because stories about looting discourage people from sending in life-saving donations (that's what happened during Katrina, many people did not want to donate to "criminals.") Off-topic note over :)

Actually Roxie no - there really isn't much in the way of looting in japan as you see it here - and it is a societal difference. My brother happens to live in Japan and is working with teams who are cleaning up the tsunami areas. Not only are people not looting, they are salvaging photo albums and other personal items and trying to reunite them with their owners - something we never see happening here - or if it happens we never hear about it. The media isn't discriminating - when the coverage was constant I heard several reporters asking "is there looting" and all they got was blank looks like "what does that mean". Why? Because that doesn't happen in Japan. They do have a different societal way of dealing with crises and with need - you cannot judge them by the standards of other places.
