Those small robots will never have smooth, svelte legs. Right now they have thick heavy legs and large wide feet so they don't have to devote any hardware or processing power to balancing or standing. They're weighted to stand even when they're turned off. They are like paperweights: bottom heavy with a wide base. If they had to actually balance themselves you would have to multiply their list price by 10 to 25 due to the increase in hardware required.

You can get around some of it with clunky shoes. The idea is similar to that of a classic stop motion puppet, they need heavy feet to free stand but have all sorts of joints and what not inside. I'd say start with a skeleton that moves how you want then make a doll over it. You could always hide stuff in a backpack the doll wears.
