MeltedCaramel wrote:squishyfoxes Oh, this is so...pretty, for lack of a better word. :D Gorgeous music. My favourite "protest" type song is by (of course) Peter Gabriel and it's called "The Tower That Ate People". It's definitely a more techno/rock beat, but as far as protests go I find it awesome, especially the haunting chorus at the end of a bunch of workers singing "Brick by brick, by brick, by brick we're building, brick by brick..." over and over. (There's two versions of the song, here's one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTQDS8dA6YE )

i gave it a listen! i loved it! what a great song. it reminded me of a mix of Fleet Foxes, Foster the People, and Björk. It had Fleet Foxes' serious tone, Foster the Peoples' protest and techno beat, and Björk's tune. I'll have to check out more music by this person! ^^

Peter Gabriel is great, listen to more of his stuff.

My favorite protest song is Won't Get Fooled Again by The Who. If you listen beyond what CSI uses and look in to what Pete Townshend says inspired it the gist is about not taking away someone's right to chose what they want.

At first, I didn't think I could post in this thread, since I don't have just one favorite song but rather categorize favorites by singers and my fav by each. ^^

Hymn - 'Finally Home' and 'On Eagle's Wings'
Christmas Song - 'O Holy Night'
Deanna Durbin - 'Love is All' and 'Waltzing in the Clouds'
Bee Gees - 'Too Much Heaven' (Though I have a LOT of 'favs' from them, particularly some lesser known compositions that are really deep, like 'First of May', 'Morning of My Life', 'Country Roads', 'For Whom the Bell Tolls')
Carpenters - 'For All We Know'
Anne Murray - Broken Hearted Me
Il Volo - 'Luna Nascosta'
Granrodeo/Taniyama Kisho - 'Infinite Love' and 'ここにあるぬくもり' (Koko ni Aru Nukumori = Warmth Exists Here)
Anime: (Kiniro no Corda) 'Tear' by Tsukimori Len (Taniyama Kisho)
Disney Princess: (Sleeping Beauty) 'Once Upon a Dream' by Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip (Mary Costa and Bill Shirley) (But I also adore 'Colors of the Wind' by Pocahontas, 'Reflection' by Mulan, 'I See the Light' by Rapunzel and Flynn/Eugene)
Cartoon/Animated: (My Little Pony: FiM) 'Art of the Dress' and 'Becoming Popular' by Rarity

SquishyPies <---Messed up your SN the first time there. But anyway, I'm glad you gave it a listen!! <3 Peter Gabriel has some GORGEOUS music. If you liked that song I would suggest something like his "Up" album to give a listen to first. Or his classic "Solsbury Hill". He does everything from experimental to creepy songs that just crawl across your skin in the best way. I love "Through the Wire" which is about a stalker and throughout the song you hear the screech of piano wire being scraped and it just adds such dark, dramatic flair. If you like Peter Gabriel you might like Genesis too. Part of my "big four" (Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Genesis, Eric Clapton), Peter headed Genesis before Phil Collins took over, and I adore both eras equally. <3

DollyKim You like Peter Gabriel too? Awesome! :D What's your favourite by him, if I may ask? Or one of them anyway? As you can see I can't possibly choose between songs when it comes to my favourite artists.

Hmnn, another really great protest song to add alongside The Who in my opinion would be the cover of the Rolling Stone's classic "Gimme Shelter" by Angelique Kidjo (Omg anyone who loves world music needs to listen to her IMMEDIATELY. She turned Jimmi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child" into a true "voodoo" sounding experience.) the song also features Joss Stone. :)

SetsunaKou You're welcome to post in any thread of mine any time!! <3 I don't have strict rules on my topics or anything! Besides, you're sweet as sugar, who wouldn't want you posting in their thread?!

What sticks out of your post for me most is the Disney songs. I loved "I'll Make a Man Out of You" from Mulan, and "Colours of the Wind" from Pochahontas, and "Listen With Your Heart" from the same movie. <3 Disney makes some good music, that I'll give them. Besides, they hired Phil Collins for Tarzan, how can I not like them!? <333

As for anime, I LOVE a lot of the Wolf's Rain soundtrack, especially "Stray" which literally sounds like Sting sang it. XDD

Love Disney songs! I have at least a dozen on my Ipod Nano. Adding to the list already mentioned: Part of your World, 2nd Star to the Right & I Won't Say (I'm in Love).

Favorite protest singers: Woody & Arlo Guthrie, Peter, Paul & Mary (Blowing in the Wind), The Chad Mitchell Trio (who sang it with humor), John Denver (Daniel, Paradise) and of course, Bob Dylan, esp. 'The Times They Are a Changin.'
Just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD.

I've listened to Peter Gabriel but not enough to have a favorite yet. There are plenty of artists I enjoy because they're good. I have some people I only like one song they did and others I have box sets of.

Kenaiqueen Another Disney song lover too! :D My most recent obsession is the song "(I Got) Friends On The Other Side" from "The Princess and the Frog".

DollyKim Definitely listen to some more Peter Gabriel. :) I'd recommend his popular stuff first, and he's got a lot of hidden gems that don't get airplay. <3

Ahh, music. Other than dolls, 'tis my life. If I couldn't sing, I couldn't live.

Asking me to choose a favorite song would be like asking me to choose a favorite food. Or movie. Or anime. My lifemate calls me her "little butterfly" because I'm always flitting from one thing to another and I never settle on a single favorite for long. (Well, except for her. We've been together TWENTY-FIVE years, so there.)

However, I can mention a few songs that have special meaning to me.

"Left of Center", Suzanne Vega - I consider this my "theme song". It's what I named my website after, fifteen years ago.

"Girl", Frente - That's Cherry's theme song, pretty much. "A girl is a verb" is a perfect description of her.

"True Colors", Cyndi Lauper - Barbara and I bonded over this song when we first got together, and I can't listen to it now without tearing up over it.

"Anything But Ordinary", Avril Lavigne - my best friend Kristyn and I have been known to sing this at the top of our lungs.

I could go on, but you get the idea.

Hey there embyquinn! :D Haha, that's why I said in my OP that you don't have to pick one favourite! I would never be able to pick just one song. I'm a bit like you I think. Music isn't just entertainment to me, it's vital. Songs are powerful to me, not just ear candy. It ties in with my life so closely that I couldn't untangle the two even if I wanted to. My family bonds over music, we live to the beat of it. (Thankfully everyone in my house pretty much agrees on music tastes!! )

Also, your partner sounds adorable. :) Her "little butterfly". That's such a sweet nickname! <3

Suzanne Vega's "Left of Center" has been on my playlist for awhile!! I just love the way the song sounds!!

I love the song "True Colours", it's so gorgeous, no matter who is singing it, but of course Phil Collins did a cover and that's my favourite. The way he sings it....just listen! If you have time for one version, check out the concert version. :D

I had the pleasure of seeing his last concert tour live (he had to retire from concerts after the Genesis reunion tour (which I also saw!! <3) because of an inner ear problem that makes the concert feedback ear mic actually dangerous to his hearing) and when he sings songs like this and the song "You'll be in my heart" he mentions that he sings the songs as if he's singing his to his children and he just packs so much emotion behind it.

<33 Great choices in songs Embyquinn!!!!
