she spent 5 years complaining about my last haircut. 5 years. I didn't even live here for a good chunk of those and she still complained about my hair every time she saw me.
wehlp, I get my RN, I move out, I'll have my hair whatever I want. until then, I'll just leave it so its one less thing she can pick on that doesn't fit her image of what I should look like. -_-

You are smart to choose your battles. I hope you can eventually work out a more adult friendship with your mom in the future. I wasn't very close to my mom, but I do miss talking about books with her.
Just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD.

Have to agree. When your mom throws a fit just lock yourself in your room and avoid her. You're an adult. If you're unhappy with your situation, you've only got yourself to blame for never standing up for yourself and allowing her to control your life. Take a stand and change things, or not. But I'm afraid I don't have much sympathy for you.

I know a girl whose parents controlled every aspect of her life. She grew up being unable to think for herself or stand up for herself. She even married a guy they told her she should marry. She WANTED to marry someone else that they didn't approve of, but they talked her out of it and said marry THIS guy, he'd be a good husband. So she did. And her mother had some grudge against me due to an incident years before in which I would NOT allow her to control ME, so she told this girl "Don't invite her to the wedding." So she didn't. Even though we were friends.

Long story short, in the end she still isn't free because her husband is an abusive asshole who moved her to another state to separate her from everyone she knows, and because her family "doesn't believe in divorce", she won't leave his sorry ass. Even though she has a couple of kids now, even for their sakes she won't leave. And I think it's because she's too scared to try and make it on her own (or to move back with her parents). She won't know how to live by herself, without anyone telling her what to do. I really expect her story is going to end in tragedy someday, either for herself or her kids. Frankly, I just want to smack her parents upside the head and yell, "It's all YOUR fault, you morons! Do something about it!"

Anyway, sorry for the tangent. I just thought that was a good example of what happens when children grow up under the thumb of their parents, and won't even try to stand on their own. After what happened to her, complaining about a haircut seems like no big deal in comparison. :|

I'M ALIVE!!!!! Life has drug me in other directions and I was just looking at my dolls thinking 'you know it hasn't been that long.' ERRRRR, wrong!

Anywho, I know what you mean, knittnkittn. My MiL is exactly like that and she doesn't even live on the same continent as us. We don't want to cut her out of our life completely but it's oh so tempting when she refuses to drop her crusades. Usually it's religion, but it's ranged from our 'cultural ignorance' to the type of milk we drink. Keeping the peace for our son gets harder and harder ever conversation. We keep telling ourselves she means well but the truth is she just can't handle her own perceived failures and she takes it out on every little thing.

Not sure if having a garage sale is a gripe or a rejoice  but we are having one tomorrow and Saturday, so if you don't see a lot of me for the next couple of days - that's why. Wish us lots of money! There's a leak in the roof now so we'll need it!

I plan having a garage this weekend too. Lucky my sister is letting us host it at her place in town. Good luck to us both!
I'm mostly on Tumblr now.

@knittnkitten When you get your RN might be the time to get the hair cut. When I once and for all quit being on screen I no longer had to have super long hair and all but shaved my head to symbolize that life change.

Controlling smothering people create what they fear, the person they control up and leaves them. Only when my smother took some serious financial hits and needed me in the place of a bill paying room mate did many things change. If I were to up and leave she and my pay nothing sister would be homeless. She treats me like a child I leave the situation, she acts like a child I leave the situation. I always pay my bills, I have extra money for pet food and necessities. When things are good I have extra money for other family things, when they aren't I don't. In the most part it works.

I wouldn't go that far and say she would make me marry someone I didn't want to, and if I told her he was abusing me, she'd probably be the first one to go shoot his ass and buy him in a friend's cowfield.

yeah, I probably will cut my hair when I get an RN. you have to understand, I don't do everything she tells me. I have two tattoos she didn't know I got till ages later, and for the most part, I will do what I want. but there are certain things she just will not let go : my weight, my hair, the way I dress. there are things in the past I have looked at her and went "yeah, that's crap" and she's learned she can't manipulate me that way.
unfortunately there are just some battles not worth fighting and getting a punky haircut is one of them.

That sounds fun/hectic/potentially fruitful. Hope it goes well.
