arg. I really want to cut my hair short. like clipped close to the sides and a little bit longer on top, because having it this long is driving me nuts. but mom throws an absolute FIT if I cut my hair in anything but a blunt cut. it already drives her nuts that my hair is shorter in the back than the front.

I guess after 11 years, I'm used to squishy ear plugs. My work provides other kinds that aren't disposable. They're rubber and are washable, but those things are SO uncomfortable. They actually cause me physical pain to wear them, and they don't work as well, anyhow. The squishies I can make last for quite awhile. I wash them off with mild soap and water and let them dry thoroughly (I usually switch them out with another pair for awhile). I know, we're not SUPPOSED to do that, but so far I've had no issues, and if my workplace is too cheap to provide decent earplugs, I don't have much of a choice except buy my own. I can get ten pairs for four dollars, so they last awhile.

Erm ... just curious, but why does your mom get any say in what you do with your hair? It's YOUR hair. Not hers. Cut it how you want and ignore her? I just find that ... odd.

have you ever had someone in your life that would throw such a shit fit over things that you start avoiding doing things so you could avoid the shit fit and the week of not being talked to afterwards? and then lived with that person? so they can pick at what they don't like every second you are around them and unable to afford to move out? that. so no, I can't just do it and ignore her because until it grows out, I'd be hearing her complain about it.

...My mother used to behave like that over minor stuff too - I just continued doing it; until the arguments decreased in duration from a few days to being over the same day. Anything that she deems "major" though is another matter... But I wore her down in the end! It only took ...what 7 years of ignoring her when she was being idiotic?

I have not washed dishes in 30 years anywhere near my smother because the last time I did I used the "wrong" dishrag. If I can't do it right for her I'm just not going to do it. If it's something I need to do in my day to day I'll do it but I won't say anything about it. I won't craft around her ever.

Afterward I had to entirely re-socialize myself in order to communicate with normal people.

You're an adult, you don't have to cut your hair how your mother likes. And the sooner you stop going out of your way to please her, the sooner she will realize that she can't expect you to keep doing what she wants and she WILL get over it.

Tell your mother that's it's your hair and you will do what you want and if she continues to harass you over things just shut down the whole conversation by walking away.

I wish that worked with my MIL but the damn woman has my husband's phone number! >:/
