Opinions wanted (X-posted)

Postby ivory stardust » Sun Oct 24, 2010 9:48 pm

Once again. I find myself torn. Just when I thought I had everything all figured out, too.

See, I have this one boy that I am planning. And I had been flipping around between: BBB Gang, AoD Hao, and Dragon Doll Di. I finally settled on the BBB because he's the least expensive.

But then I got to thinking... he's not *that* much less, and besides, I plan to have this boy forever, so why base it on who's cheapest? Right?

So.... once again I am up in the air about which one to get for him. A little info on him: He's a musician - think 80s hair band kind, only less Poison and more Trixter. He's often mistaken for a girl, which he hates, but isn't really effeminate, he's just kinda delicate looking and has long hair. He's very pretty. ^__^

And now, I ask you all... because I do rather like second (third, fourth, fifth...) opinions

BBB Gang
AoD Hao
Dragon Doll Di

Hm......
Well, I don't know anything about Dragon Dolls, so I can't answer to that. AoD dolls pose absolutely great. BBB/RS are more floppy. The AoD doll would probably be heavier and thicker- the RS doll more slender and delicate. Don't know if that helped.

Really, you should get the one you're the most instinctively drawn to, even if it means having to save up a bit more money. Or just get all three of them.

I vote for the AoD. Take a look at pictures of Kiki's doll, Erik. He's an AoD body. I really like the face on the Hao, IMHO it looks more 80's band. If you want him without a faceup, you can always ask Emory to get him in for you.

If I hadn't gotten my MNF before Emory received the latest AOD shipment I probably would have gone with an AOD Min, myself. I currently have an AOD Wang Zi (that I'm selling) and I love his posability, torso detail and facial sculpt. If I had a use for 2 boys (and didn't want a MSD girl) I'd keep him. They are heftier and taller than pretty much any of the other MSDs out there from what I've seen. Still, he's very cuddly.

I did have a BBB Mei. She was impossible to pose until I got all new elastic for her and ended up selling her the very same day, so I can't say if that helped (although the new owner seems pleased with her).

And, yeah - I don't know anything about Dragon Doll, either. However you'd need to be willing for him to have a distinct Asian look.

Cirque: "Or just get all three of them." I like the way you think! Now, to convince the hubby of that one...

Zirc: I'll have to hunt up pics of Erik. Cuz, ya know, looking at pics of Kiki's boys does sound like an afternoon well spent to me. :D If I do decide to go with him, I think I will see if Emory can get him faceup-free for me. While the default ones look nice in the pics, I still think I'd rather have a custom one in the long run.

Kirahfaye: If the boy you're selling was SD I'd probably just take him off your hands and be done... he's so cute! The Asian look wouldn't bother me, Quinn is half-Korean. I think that may be what's kept the Dragon doll in the running, because part of me chokes a little every time I think $325. I know, only $25 more than the AoD, but it just *sounds* like so much more somehow. Still, he's pretty! They're ALL pretty! I keep hearing about the BBB floppiness, and that's one thing that has made me think twice about Gang... I know some like the floppiness, but I'm not sure how well I'd take to it.

Given as they are all in a similar price range (and honestly, when you are blowing that much money on a doll $25 shouldn't make you hesitate) I would say go with the one whose face you like the best. Seriously - that's what IS the doll for you so don't settle for second best. And I'm not implying that means a less expensive doll isn't the right one, I always try to look at doll first, and then price tag - but what I never do is "settle" for the wrong doll if I'm buying one to be a specifically envisioned character. It just isn't worth it in the end because you'll end up regretting.

I dont' have 1/3 in any of the brands you are looking at, but I have 1/4 scales of all three and I like'm all. My Dragondoll is a cutie that I bought on impulse and just adore, and I love my AoD (ok, she's a girl, but still), however, though I love my BBB I am of the "not so fond of floppiness" school. I like my doll to sit up and stand, which I do have issues with on my BBB Sprite.

I couldn't agree more with GH on this! I knew I wanted the MNF scar head for my character (the only one that came close was AOD Min), but I gave in to a great price and a cute face. Now I have two boys when I only want one.

I'll know about the 1/3 scale AOD in a few days, though!

I agree. I have found that if you want a certain doll, but get another one instead for whatever reason, you'll never be happy with it and then eventually you'll still end up buying the one you originally wanted. So I say, listen to your heart and get the one that really speaks to you.

Well, if you go with the AoD, I can make his clothes right away! And I am pretty sure Kiki has modified her patterns for Erik already... I have an MSD AoD, and I really like his body sculpt. Here's a link to one of Kiki's posts, with Erik in a see through shirt. Mmmmmm http://www.junkyspot.com/OBITSU/forums/index.php?showtopic=25023&hl= I like the body proportions better than the Dragon Doll.

That said, I totally agree that you should look at the doll's face first and then the rest.

I want to cast my vote in with everyone else saying you should get the one you like best. Honestly, these dolls are enough of an investment that there is no point in settling on one you don't like as well.
