Katt's Jem and the Holograms 2025 Doll Comparison/Review

After many months of waiting and searching, the new Jem and the Holograms doll was FINALLY available for delivery from my local Walmart. (I was too excited to open her and didn't get a picture of her in the box.)

Inside, you get the Jem doll in her classic pink dress with (reversible) fringed belt and pink pumps, a doll stand that plays a snippet of the theme song (includes the musical base, the pole, and a waist bracket), an interchangeable bracket to convert the doll stand into a mic stand, a pink and silver microphone, a JEM logo comb, a VIP lanyard, a clear plastic holder with a JEM and the Holograms card inside (likely meant to imitate a VIP backstage pass) that clips to the lanyard, a pink holographic cardboard concert ticket, a sheet of stickers made to look like a strip of film, a second outfit (Jerrica's white and teal striped dress with matching hat, glasses, and metallic teal pumps), and instructions for the doll stand.

First impressions of the doll: She's a hefty girl, much heavier than a Barbie. She feels like she could handle being played with. I'm not worried about breaking her when handling her, unlike some dolls I own. She has 18 points of articulation (by my standards, at least). Ahw pivots at the head, has full rotation on the shoulder, swivels at the upper arm, has a double jointed elbow joint, swivels and bends at the wrist, has a joint in the upper torso, full rotation at the hip, swivels at the upper thigh, has a double jointed knee, and swivels and bends at the ankle. So she's on par with Made to Move Barbie or a 1:6 scale Obitsu for articulation.

The artwork on the box is almost identical to the boxes from the 80s. I absolutely LOVE the art on the box. It's so lovely.

As for how she compares to other dolls in her scale, she's very similar in build to the Curvy Made to Move Barbie. She has a slightly larger bust and larger hip circumference, and she's slightly taller. She's also significantly heavier than her Barbie counterpart.

Her feet are much larger than either a standard Barbie or a Curvy Barbie, and are pretty realistically proportioned with the rest of her body. (From left to right, original Made to Move Barbie door, Curvy Made to Move Barbie door, and Jem's foot.)

Similar situation with her hands, they're proportional to her body, especially compared to Barbie's dainty digits. (From left to right: Petite MtM Hand, Classic MtM Barbie hand, Curvy MtM Barbie hand, WWE Superstars hand (on a tall MtM body), and Jem's hand.)

Now, on to my only real complaint with this doll. Her hair. It took FAR too long to get that hat onto her head. I absolutely love her beautiful pink hair, but it's SO slippery that it has no grip. (I think it might be nylon, based on the texture.) It took nearly ten minutes to get her hat to stay on, and to do it, I had to put her hair up in a half ponytail and then hook the back of the hat down over the ponytail. Otherwise, the elastic just slides up her hair and the hat pops off her head. Once it's on, though, it's very cute.

And these are just some bonus pics of Stevie Rhae wearing the outfits because they actually fit her really well, and she looks cute. The tights are technically too long, but it's easy to slide the excess up her legs and hide it under the dress. (Note: The hat has no issue staying on Stevie Rhae's head, so it's definitely the hair that's the problem.)

So, pros and cons.

Pros: She's a stout, sturdy doll that will hold up well even if she's played with. The clothes seem to be nicely made for this price point (she's around $25), and the extras are a nice touch. I think there's a lot of collector AND play value here. Also, the mic fits very securely in her hand because of the type of flexible vinyl her hand is made from, so she's not likely to drop it while on display, and she'll probably do well holding it even with standard play.

Cons: As I mentioned, her hair is slippery to the point her hat won't stay on without some styling. (She's also a little sparsely rooted, but her hair is so voluminous that it's hard to tell unless you're actively playing with her hair.) I also have some concerns with the plastic the waist bracket is made of potentially breaking, as it's a pretty hard plastic that I don't think will age well. It works best if you slide the doll in with the narrowest part of her waist first, then spin her around once she's in the bracket. Also, the pink dress STAINS. (The inside of the fabric is red, which any doll collector worth their salt knows is an evil color on vinyl and soft plastic.) My doll already has stains on her lower arms and torso from where she was secured in the box. (You can see the stains in the picture of the body comparison between her and Stevie Rhae, it looks a bit like bruising.) It seems the staining was caused by the pressure of the ties securing her in the box pressing the pigment into her plastic, but given how new these dolls are, it's something to consider for display and storage purposes, as she will likely continue to stain, and the dress may stain other dolls and fabric if she's stored with other dolls.

Overall, I really like her, and I'm looking forward to future dolls in this line. (A Pizzazz prototype and a Glitter and Gold prototype were seen at Toy Fair this year, so let's keep our fingers crossed.)

Note: There IS a left and a right shoe. They're marked on the inside with an L and R respectively, and they won't fit on the wrong foot. Also, no, the shoes won't fit the Integrity Toys Jem dolls. Sybela (not shown) has the same body and feet as the IT Jem dolls, and the shoes from this Jem are much too big for her.
