Photo Backdrops/Backgrounds?

Postby kenaiqueen » Fri Jan 31, 2014 2:36 pm

Has anyone here ever bought a photo backdrop/background specifically made for dolls? I've been looking at them on ebay and trying to decide if I want one. I'm terrible at posing my dolls for pictures and don't do photo stories, but I'd like something pretty and non-clashing in the background. Anyone have any thoughts/ideas/experience in these. (And mods, if this is not the right place, please move!)

What kind of photo backgrounds because you can just get some fabric or foam core boards or a roll of paper, or use green screen and some computer software.

I have taken pictures on someone else's backdrop, and it was fun. For most pictures I have places already set up. I also have a painting that I use. I would actually suggest just buying fabric and a foamcore board, like DollyKim suggested, fabric is the easiest. Get 2 yards of a nice neutral color like grey or grey/blue, black or white. That way you can clip the fabric to the board and drape it onto the floor like a professional backdrop. You can also use a sheet or blanket. The only problem I have with the commercial backdrops is that you are limited to the one you pick. If you find one you really like and that looks like you imagine your dolls living space then I would buy it.

I have used some foamcore and posterboard at times and fabric or scarves, but they just seem so generic. So far I like this one the best:

However, it a bit darker/moodier than I really wanted. I was hoping to find a pretty fantasy garden scene, but haven't seen what I want in 1/4 size yet. I'm considering looking for a Thomas Kinkade type garden poster/picture for a background.

kenaiqueen If you're looking for a fantasy-outdoorsy scene, I would suggest this. Find a high quality stock photo online, something that won't distort too much when blown up, that you want for the background, and then for the "floor" (if you plan on doing a long shot), do a different search (or go outside and find a nice mossy, pretty area if you have something like that where you live :) ) and try and find pictures that match up as well as possible. Take them to your local Kinko's/etc on a memory card and have them blown up onto cardstock into whatever size you desire. :) Cheap, easy way to get pretty much whatever backdrop you want. :D

I've got a few of the backdrops from Raihing, which are fun to use. They do a custom service with your own pic, too. I'm still getting to grips with them - this is possibly one of the better ones I've done. I'm planning on pinning them to foamcore for better results - until now I've been using every single bulldog clip I could lay my hands on!

myfroggystuff on youtube has some cool ideas for making folding sets. was planning on giving them a shot later on.
i just like that they can be folded up and shelved or stored in bins. labour intensive though.

These are awesome and more of what I was looking for! Thanks so much for the link. I knew someone here had to have a line on the good stuff. :D Hard part will be choosing just one. Will have to see how much my paycheck can stand. Thanks again!

No probs! It is hard to choose! Some of them are very similar - especially the more fantasy based ones which are the same image with different colours, which does make it easier. But not much...
