Opinions on completely changing a doll's look?

Postby Kattriella » Sun Jan 12, 2025 8:20 pm

So for nearly a decade, I've had a doll who was a specific character. However, she's never QUITE been right. Recently, I had to redo her eyes, and now I'm even less happy with her. However, I've recently come across a completely different doll with a completely different face that I have fallen in love with and feel would be a much better fit for her. I'm just torn because she's been the same doll for nearly a decade now, even if she never quite felt right. I was just wondering if anyone else has opinions or has had this experience. (I'm sure I can't be alone. Basically, I just wanted to open up this conversation and vent into the Void.

I had a 1/6 scale head who was "Svetlana" for a good 20 years because I needed a Svetlana, she went thru several Barbie bodies as joints improved and fulfilled that role that was needed. When the time came to give up the mantle and go be someone else she accepted gracefully.

When I figured out my Volks MDD was probably meant to be a DIY Card Captor Sakura I thought I had found a general character for her. Nope, outside of one magic girl outfit she's... Someone else? We haven't exactly clicked but she's welcome to stay.

Don't ask the 45+ year old childhood dolls how many names and personalities they've had. Let her rest for a while and she'll be good as someone new.

Yes. I went through at least 3 different dolls for my OC, Kirahfaye, before I found "her". I think it took something like 5 years.

If anyone has seen my pink haired 27cm Obitsu floating around, that's the girl in question. The Odille face from Barbie is SO CUTE, and it just feels like it fits her better. Plus, even a pixelated face is a better job than what I gave her. It doesn't help that she's DEFINITELY starting to show her age and her face doesn't really match her body that well anymore. I think it's just time for Reini to get an upgrade. Plus, then she can shop in Barbie's Endless Closet, which means her current clothes will ACTUALLY fit her instead of falling off her vinyl titties every time she moves. Poor girl has done more flashing than a drunk sorority girl at Mardi Gras.

A couple months ago I pulled off the head of a doll that someone carefully crochet for me and totally redid it. Now she's a little closer to being my avatar character UtterlyWeird (the character that I play in games with personalizable player characters). So yes, I also think it's perfectly fine to redo til your friend looks right.

Just don't spoil any hard to find dolls I've been looking for in the process. :) (joke)

I tried linking one of my adopted click pets here, but the board wouldn't let me. :/

Mermaid Odile and the tennis player coming out at the same time with the same skin tone has to be an anomaly because I can't believe modern Mattel would be that smart. Like just take five seconds to figure out which MtM bodies are missing what skin tones and people will buy.

But yeah, mermaid Odile is a looker and I am half tempted buying another one to reroot. Sailor Moon Reini? I can see her being that. I have the Extras with half and half pastel hair who's also screaming magic girl cosplay.

Yup! I redo heads until they are 'perfect' to the character in question, too!

Especially if I find a sculpt which is more accurate. The older head gets a different faceup to become someone entirely different if another of my fav charas has that hair color or if not, the head gets put into the 'inventory' closet for future work. :)

The one thing I'm going to miss about the Obitsu is the swappable hands. The standard MtM hands are some of the UGLIEST hands Mattel has ever conceived. I might have to see if I have someone in storage who might be a willing donor . . .

Being a Sailor Scout wouldn't she have gloves on half the time? Could you fix up her hands with air dry clay or modeling paste and paint?

Coming off TnT Barbies with only a choice of strait or bent arms and only choice of Superstar sculpt, although to be honest it was my 90s Skippers who played Sailor Moon for me, I can look over little flaws for an over all more fun experience. Not that we didn't have fun, I just would have loved for them to have elbows.

If I were to attempt this with actual dolls, I'd want a second copy at the very least. I've considered rebodying my Trendmasters Cardcaptor Sakura dolls onto articulated, hard-plastic bodies like this person did, but while I have multiple Sakuras, I've only got one each of Li and Meilin.

As far as my amigurumi goes, though? I've not only gone back and added pieces to get certain characters closer to what I was aiming for, but swapped entire heads on two thus far (Pavo to correct a serious structural mistake, and Sailor Mercury just out of dissatisfaction with her original head).

Also made an entirely new skirt (with help) for this Gardevoir plush, but only because the original was that crap.
