How to make moldings?

I don't know where to post this but here goes.

I want to make some shoes for my 17" gals. I know it's possible to make moldings to make shoes or accessories as I have seen it done before. There is a person who I refer to: Jemgirl. You can view her work online. I want to make my own shoes but don't know where or how to start. I have tried to make a mold one out of clay but it was a horrible experience. The clay starting chipping and the shoe didn't come out quite as I expected. Can anyone perhaps give any tips? Thanks.

I've had some results with a products called Instamold and Amazing Mold Putty sold at craft stores. The Instamold works on anything you can get wet, the AMP is a bit greasy and you'll want to wash your original.

The people who make AMP have how-to videos http://www.alumilite.com/HowTos.cfm#Mold

I second the Amazing Mold Putty. While I haven't tried shoes (although I'm very curious and will probably try now) I've molded all kinds of things with it and had great success.

Oh thanks for the replies. I will have to go out and buy some now. I was looking through some of the tutorials and it seems like a fun project.
