Protecting decals

I have a head which I would like to touch up. The head has eye decals which I really, really like. I'll be essentially re-doing the rest of the face though. Is there any way to protect the decals while I'm working on the rest of the face? I guess I'll just clean off the face and add my base layer of sealant. I'm assuming that this should be enough.
