Why is it "Dollieh"

Postby KC12344325 » Wed Jun 20, 2012 7:36 pm

Why is this place "Dollieh" Sanctuary? Why isn't it just doll or dolly/dollie sanctuary? How is dollieh pronounced: dahl-ee-eh or just dolly/dollie? Is it some British/European/Australian/non-American word/spelling of doll? I'm just curious, as it seems all lot of the board members aren't from America or even an English speaking country. Thank you!
Most of my dolls are scary, but don't worry! They wont bite.

It's slang. Dollieh is sorta like kittieh (kitty).

Um....why not?

I'll go with Trethowan's explanation (which is sad since I named the place LOL)

The internet, along with the cell phone, has spawned a rampant expansion of written text messaging in many forms. This increase in the written word has also caused a massive increase in bad grammar, poor spelling, "creative" writing such as making up "words" (lol), and an overall pollution of language.

Just doing our part to hasten the downfall of civilization.

Based off of some of the typos I've found in my own posts with English being both my first and primary language, I have a hard time blaming them ;P But yeah, from what I've noticed, I'd say the majority are from the United States or at least North America with some really awesome exceptions.

EDIT: Posted this about a second ago and found a spelling error, so...haha

Actually, with the prevalence of "netspeak" and texting abbreviations, the ability to spell well has really gone downhill in the US over the last ten or so years. I've actually read about students handing in papers in class where it's entirely written in "text speak".

Sad, but true :(

It is, however, a fact that the vast majority of our membership is from the US.

I will admit that I am *really* glad that I tend to NOT see a lot of 'net speak' prevalent on this forum. That sort of 'typing' just screams laziness, low-class, and low intelligence when used consistently. How hard is it to actually TYPE OUT the full word? Unless the person is being charged per character, I don't see the point of so many useless abbreviations running rampant in 'net speak' that make it more trouble than it's worth to read the message. Also, punctuation is free, and greatly appreciated when used properly. *sigh*

Sorry, rant over.

Typing net speak is one thing. Speaking it is entirely something else. I was in a sorority at the start of my undergrad and everyone spoke entirely in abbreviations or "abbrevs" as they were referred to. Here are actual examples: "The pope is so presh!" "That skirt is tots adorbs" "I'm meeting Sarah up at the Cathedge for a stud sesh and then we're tots gonna get some Fro Yo." In the last example, Cathedge is short for Cathedral of Learning. I swear half the girls added "like" to everything as well. I also fell into the habit of abbreviating everything(thank god I skipped out on the "like")and it took a while to break.
