Can you help me identify these berries.....?

Postby SetsunaKou » Mon Dec 05, 2011 3:54 pm

Hi Min'nasama!!!!!!

I have a totally 'un-doll' question for you all today!!!!! Hopefully, we have some avid berry or tree enthusiasts here who can answer my question!! ^^

My father brought in a small piece from a tree we have, to ask me to identify it. 0_o
I'm not really an outdoorsy person and don't know much about berries, aside from strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, cranberries, so I put the query to you!!! :mrgreen: My first thought was perhaps....elderberries? But....the stems aren't quite right.... :?

It has thousands and thousands of dark purple berries on it, approx 1/2" diameter each. The green leaves are approx. 1.5" to 2" long each, with a teardrop shape and wrinkly edges. ^^;; The berries are attached to the stems on what appears like a 'bell shaped' cone attachment.

Here are some photos:

Can anyone identify these guys?

Thanks for your help in advance!!!!!

Way too big for elderberries, they are tiny, and grow in umbrella-like clusters.

They look very familiar to me. What is your general location?

Oh, thanks so much! Quidam-san, I'm located in NE Florida. ^^

Thanks, Yanagi-sen! So we can eliminate that berry!!! Thanks for letting me know!!!

And, Evelien-san, hee hee, yup, I have 'claws' as my sister always calls them. (Sorry they're kind of spotted at the moment, with paint speckles from the faceups I've been doing. EEK!) They grow so fast! I think because they are really flexible, they don't break, and so just keep growing. Sometimes, one or two will 'tear' but my nails are bendy, so they never break. ^^;;

If one does get torn, then it's really hard for me to type!! ^.~

I'm pretty sure that I've seen those before, we had them growing in trees on the farm. I always wanted to touch/eat them but my dad told me no because they were poisonous. u___u;

Let me look in my landscaping notes.

Okay, I haven't found anything yet, but the leaves really look like a pear tree.

The way the leaves are shaped and how the berries hang, make it look like a Callery Pear tree or a Green spot berry tree. But the berries look off. So maybe it's in that family?

We have them here in South Africa as well. Or at least something that looks similar. Also was told they are poisonous.
