Songs You Are Suprised By/Embarrassed That You Like!

Postby MeltedCaramel » Sat May 17, 2014 7:46 pm

Okay, I know we've talked about our favourite music videos, but, going through my playlist (I have an...eclectic taste to say the least), I realized that I have several songs that, had I not heard them, would have dismissed them solely on what I perceive my "tastes" to be. Namely, I hate rap/hip hop.

And yet, "Here Comes The Hotstepper" by Ini Kamose gets some heavy play on my playlist. So does a few Kayne West songs (despite rather despising the man!). Snuggled right up next to Nina Simone and my other regulars is stuff like "Love Lockdown" by Kanye West and "Concentrate" by Xzibit.

So, what dirty little secrets/surprising little nuggets do you have on your playlist that defy your usual taste? Tell me those earworms that have gotten past your defenses despite your best efforts!

Several by Lady Gaga, actually. Her Born This Way and Edge of Glory singles are seriously awesome, maybe because they remind me of the 80s power ballads I love, more rock than hip-hop. I also have her Fame Monster album, because I love The Fame and Bad Romance. Actually, the rest of the songs on that album aren't so bad, either. But the rest of her music is just meh and doesn't really appeal to me, and I have no desire to own any more of her albums. Unless she comes out with another one that is more rock than hip-hop, because she does have a fantastic voice, just not into her musical style.

I also love the Backstreet Boys' Larger than Life. I have no other song of theirs except that one on my ipod.

And Cotton Eye Joe by the Rednex. So catchy! Makes no sense whatsoever, but such a catchy tune! I have no idea what else they sing, but that song is awesome. lol

And Royals by Lorde. Her style isn't to my taste, really, but I LOVE that song. So much that it's my ringtone for my phone. lol Very few songs make it to ringtone-level status. (Gaga's Bad Romance and Edge of Glory are two more that have made the cut).

And, lest I forget. MmmmBop. By ... whatever their names were. lol Yes. I LIKE that song. I can't remember the name of the singers (that prepubescent boy trio of brothers), but I'll always like that song. It's catchy. And fun. Sue me.

XD; It's the music from Disney's Planes that I can't get enough of. Every time I hear the guitar kick up for Nothing can Stop Me Now I get all excited.

sometimes i get pretty embarrassed that i kind of have my mom's music tastes. living among people who mainly like things like rap and hip hop (which i also love), it's a little embarrassing jamming out to Queen and Bowie. i really love Don't Stop Me Now, which happens to be my mom's favorite ...
i'm pretty embarrassed about liking ambience, ESPECIALLY Moshimoss. his music enchants me, but my sister called it "cryptic dolphin noises" and my friends don't find the music entertaining. he's the only music artist where i don't have ANY friends who listen as well.

Stormlight--I admit I like a lot of Lady Gaga's stuff actually, for a lot of the same reasons you do. I think she gives off of a very neo-Madonna vibe not just in her "persona" but in her actual voice and music.

"Larger Than Life"! Damn, I haven't listened to that in years! I like a decent amount of Backstreet Boys and N'Sync stuff actually! BSB has got some impressive vocal chops going on in this track. I also immediately remember it for the awkward music video where it looks a awful lot like a prelude to a tentacle-hentai-meets-Evangelion with the guy in the purple plug suit. AJ I think?

"Cotton Eye Joe" is kind of transcendent of genre. ;)

"Royals"...is that the one on the commercial for the History Channel's "Vikings"? Right? XD, my ringtone right now is "Put The Gun Down" by ZZ Ward. That girl has got some pipes on her and her smokey vocals just instantly shot her up to my tops list. :)

You're thinking of Hanson!

Alopecia no Hime-- You mean the soundtrack? I might have to check that out!

VirgoVertigo-- Haha, I'm a big fan of my parents generation of music too. I was a 90's kid so when everyone was listening to boy bands and what not I kicked back with some Eric Clapton, Yes, Creedence Clearwater Revival and of course Genesis/Phil Collins/Peter Gabriel. Basically all the stuff my parents (and their parents) got stoned on as teens.

Do you have a link to a Moshimoss song you mean? :) XD, Cryptic dolphin noises? I get a bit of that same teasing because I'm into world music and new age, so I like a lot of Celtic songs and haunting, lilting melodies that the rest of my family can't stand! Stuff by Gary Stadler, like "Dona Crei Tun" (sung completely in nonsense that the singer insists is Faery speak):

I didn't think I'd like dubstep. It's just noise but it's rather fun noise. I've enjoyed trance and trance/progressive for years but I rarely went for the really hard stuff. But Skrillex isn't so bad.

Hanson? :? I'm pretty sure you mean Hanson...

Yes! That's the group I mean. lol

And I LOVE rock. Bowie, Queen, Bon Jovi ... The list goes on. I wish my coworkers had better taste. It's always the hip hop and rap, and I'm talking the kind that'd be confiscated in most schools. HARDLY the type suitable for a professional environment.

I love that only one BSB song too! But I don't have it on any of devices my tracklist XD

When I still was actively in my hometown (very little) metalhead "scene" my dirty little secret was listening to HIM. I still listen them when I'm tired or sad. When I was sixteen I listened to Iron Maiden and Manowar all the day, but now even if I'm still able to wake up with said bands or other power metal ones, when it's late and I'm mentally tired from a workday I prefer listening to Queen or Dire Straits or Bowie.

Anyway, the strangeness in my (mainly) heavy/power metal tracklists:
"Butterfly" by Crazytown. I love that song, maybe only for the ipnotical riff; the ending credits for the game "God Hand" (one of the crazyest song I've ever heard!) an only one dance song named "Butterfly" taken from some Dance Dance Revolution Game and "Heaven" by Brian Adams!

absolutely! Longing is one of my favorite Moshimoss songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcpbZOodIDw

my sister thinks that Slow Days It Was Super (his most popular song by far) is the most dolphin-y song. that one is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbBvQFERZcE
not only is his music relaxing, but he pumps out new tracks like blood. it makes me wonder if there's anything else for him to do out there in Japan?
