You can start by rigorously patrolling your stuff for High Fructose Cornsyrup and eliminating it from your diet. Doing that alone has dropped Larry's needs for meds and stabilized his blood sugar considerably.

Thanks everyone :)

Honestly, I'm not actually a big sugar consumer, but I have been drinking a lot of soda lately and I know that is my biggest problem. I've cold turkey dropped and gave away the chocolate I had in the house. Really, that was pretty much all the sugar I had around in the house. I was getting most of it at work...and...well...that certainly isn't a problem right now.

My mother has been battling diabetes her whole life, it runs in the family and I knew the risks. My doc said if I lose weight it may go away, and I've been losing weight quite a bit right now - lost my appetite from stress I think.

VV - I've got stevia for my sweetener needs right now so I should be good :)

Actually, GH, like Misty suggested - it's not the sweeteners you are conscientiously aware of that are the real problem, it's the ones added into any processed foods. Foods from oatmeal to soup to breads. Get used to spending a lot of time at the grocery store reading labels.

Oh, I know...got a loooooong lecture from my mother ;p I grew up with sugar lectures, which is probably why I didn't listen LOL. My mother never figured out that constant nagging does not result in a person listening to you.

SO we will all nag you instead, lol.
But Misty was right- look for HIDDEN sugar. It's everywhere. "Cane juice", "HFCS" "Corn Syrup", they disguise it in a lot of ways, you need to learn every possible term for "sugar" and look for it in the ingredients. At one point McDonald's HAMBURGER MEAT actually had added sugar. (!!!)

I have issues with sugar myself- it affects my already totally screwed up digestion. I find that unless I stay COMPLETELY away from it, I crave it. So if I even have one hard candy- I immediately want more. For me, the trick is to stay away from it completely. If I don't have it, I don't crave it, but one box of swag from Emory...and I'm sunk.

Also, dark chocolate is not that high in sugar. I can do a little of that without going over the Sugar Cliff. I only drink water and iced tea (no sugar added) and I don't miss it at all. Also - sometimes when you think you are craving sugar, you really need protein or fats- so a handful of nuts or some cheese can make that go away.

Good luck with it- glad you're losing weight, but not this way. It sucks- I lost a lot of weight with my tummy issues (the only plus about the whole thing). But then when I finally started feeling better- it all crept back up.

^This. I rarely eat chocolate and when I do I stretch it out, but I started eating dark chocolate years ago. I mean the 80% and 90-95% cacao stuffs! And now I almost can't eat regular chocolate candy any more because they're so sweet to me they hurt my teeth. Dark choco can taste bitter at first but it grows on you and it's good for you. I've gotten my mom eating dark chocolate now, lol! But just like cirquemom said, if you feel yourself craving sugar, eat some nuts. Keeping nutty trailmixes on hand can help, but be sure to watch for the other ingredients. Eating more fish can help lower the cravings, too.

I also support the "stay away from processed foods" bit. I cook from scratch predominantly, so if I start feeling sluggish I can usually be certain it's from when I cheaped out and picked up some processed food item, lol! ...or got that fast food hamburger I probably shouldn't have... =whistles innocently= They give you false highs and sugar crashes, and you'd be surprised how many food items on grocery store shelves suffer from high sugar content.

Processed oatmeal... hehe, I'd probably forget it even exists if it wasn't with the rolled oat containers. Same with grits. 8-)

Geez... somehow this post makes me look like a health nut, lol!

To add my own line of "suxage"... still waiting for the weather to dry up a bit so I can spray sealant. >_<
