Not biting involves the word OUCH! You say it with a deep growling voice they don't like. If they keep gnawing you stick something they can chew on in there. With my puppies I'd catch them sitting and make a fuss and go "good sit!" in a happy squeaky voice. They caught on if they came up to me and sat they'd get attention first. I also got Blarney not to jump when I was carrying something, like the mail, by making her sit then letting her see and sniff what I had. If it was a toy she couldn't have it until she was sitting and told she could take it.
Most of training is patience and giving a name to what they're doing and rewarding good behaviors immediately. They want to please. Velvet is catching on that biting is called OUCH and if she keeps it up I won't play with her, accidents aside, if she sticks to kisses I'll play.
