A comment on polyurethane resin.

The place for those OT discussions that you just HAVE to share in a doll themed forum.

PMng is probably the best solution all around. I personally think it would be nice if DoA would open up a subforum for dolls they consider OT, but I suppose they feel they couldn't narrow the definition enough.

When I'm in a less than charitable mood I think that maybe it's the whole "us versus them" mentality that some BJD owners find so appealing--you know, the thought that "My doll is better/more special than yours because it's made of resin, comes from Asia, and cost ten times more." But that's just me being petty, I suppose.

I honestly think it started because they didn't want the forum to get out of control. After all, there's a huge BJD fandom, and there's also a huge Barbie fandom, a huge Blythe fandom, a huge Tonner fandom, etc., and they just don't have the bandwidth to support all of it. As time goes by, however, they seem to be getting more and more picky, as the field gets wider, the fandom grew, and the lines between type of doll start to blur. Like the Goodreau dolls - American made resin BJDs that look like an amalgation of a BJD and an American Girl doll. And as they get more particular, personal taste becomes more of an issue. Nowadays, it doesn't even get an automatic pass if it's a resin doll made by an Asian company whose other dolls they allow. Meanwhile, because people like being better than other people and don't like admitting that their leadership is biased, people start getting all elitist about stuff.

We, on the other hand, have the advantage of being a fairly small group. It's no hardship for us to let everyone show off their entire collection, because there are few enough of us it doesn't make much of a difference.

I think there is another factor too. As They got bigger, the mods chosen tended to be people who ((had no real life)) were really emotionally invested in the expensive dolls they'd gotten ((conned)) persuaded to buy, and ((had jobs involving paper hats, nametags and the words "would you like fries with that?")) generally found their hobby far more satisfying than anything else. As a result, ((it was natural for them to turn into forum nazis as soon as they had a little power)) tend to be excessively zealous to preserve their ((religion)) hobby and ((perceived superiority to anyone who won't shell out huge bucks for a hunk of plastic)) perceived social status. Anyway that is my story and I am sticking to it.
