I went very carefully over the submission guidelines and nowhere is anything said about what rights the author retains. In literary contracts, any rights not specifically claimed by the publisher or would-be publisher are the property of the author. (BTW any "contest" that says it owns all rights to all submissions is not one that I would submit to.)

So in submitting, you still retain your rights.

I was not, however, able to find any rules regarding the winning entry. This tells me that a specific contract will be issued for the property. Given that this is Hearst...I have conflicting thoughts. Hearst is usually pretty good about how they treat writers. On the other hand, Hearst has been known lately for re-using and re-publishing stuff without permission or payment, even when the contract only said "first North American serial rights."

So I would assume that Hearst will present the winner with a contract that basically ties up every single right to that property forever. Just in case, you know, Showtime wanted to make a movie out of it.

So you have to ask yourself, do you want to sell all rights to that story forever for $5000?

Only you can answer that question.

Sometimes that first $5000 "throw away" story pays for your masterpiece too. I have a few things I'd "sacrifice" to pay for Xavier's story.

Speaking of X I've always thought it's how loved the doll is over the price. I'd rather see a smudged, chipped, loosely strung single doll clutched lovingly then an army of pristine $1000 dolls. How the doll is done up can matter too, my lowly Dollzone has been out and about and recognized by people who know what a BJD is only to have them be amazed he's a Dollzone. Maybe it's because he looks like a boy?

My Resinsoul Dai poses just as well, if not better than, any other doll I've seen. Since she's been properly restrung with better elastic and I sueded her, she can do lots of poses on par with the smaller Obitsus. Eventually I will take proper photo documentation of this. The only problem I have with her is her tiny tiny hands which I will eventually replace with hands from a different company. My DZ needed the same amount of restringing/sueding as my RS’s to be the awesome, cooperative doll he is today. I prefer the way BBB/RS girls look to most other companies and I prefer DZ boys to most other companies. Though I do prefer the feel of DZ resin.

For me the ‘quality’ of the doll is more what you do with it/how you feel about it than anything else.

I have some dolls from"bigger" companies, and my RS Lan is still one of the most beautiful dolls I've ever seen. Not only her face, but her body is lovely.
I agree with everyone else: buy the doll that speaks to your heart.
As far as publishing. Victoria Victrix knows what she's talking about. She's the real deal--AND she makes gorgeous doll clothes.

Resinsouls are my absolute favorite dolls. This is coming from someone with the more expensive brands too. I just like them better. They pose just as well, come in many colours, have great customer service, don't break the bank, and are darn cute.

Here's one of my four.
